Comparing Nas { Network Attached Storage} , And A Traditional File Server

By:

File or data storage has passed the level of using floppies and traditional file servers , more advanced forms of storages such as SAN and NAS are now being used in storing and organizing data in such a way that such stored information can be accessed or retrieved at any moment. Basic client server networking technologies are used for data storages especially for central file servers, the hard driver stored in the server will provide gigabyte of storage spaces ,however with NAS, a traditional file server approach in which different systems designed designed for different data storages are created.

NAS helps in the design of a back-bone that supports file transfers, and add some other features from the bottom to the top of a network data organization. A client/server design is followed in NAS, there is a provision of a NAS box which acts as an interface between the network clients and the NAS hardware design {these hardware devices monitor every other component from the client line and these include, keyboard and computer monitor}. NAS is run in form of an embedded operating system, and it comprises of several other features, including; secure authentication, and disk space quotas. NAS also includes automatic email alerts, sent to a client when errors occur.

NAS operates on higher level protocols {most especially the application layer of the OSI model} , the commonest 2 protocols associated with NAS are; NFS{ Sun Network file system}, and the CIFS{ common file Internet system}, these two protocols operate through the client and server interaction.

Comparing NAS with traditional file servers, one can say that NAS has lots of benefits over the latter, it has a better security platform, it is less expensive, it is easier to administer and maintained, and it offers a less downtime. NAS has been upgraded to increase its efficiencies and simplicity, NAS system can be re-booted and problems can be diagnosed at much faster rates due to its simple nature. It is much less prone to security attacks and which means it crashes less often.

It should be noted that the functions of NAS will depend on its connection to individual devices on the client and server interface, thus it offers a simpler network storage capabilities. The high end performance rates which occur in a client/server relationship with NAS ensure that there are very few downtime sessions over the networks.
