Comparing Dental Implants Versus Dentures

By:

Tooth loss can happen to us as we grow old. However, aging is not the only cause. Usually, we lose our teeth because of neglect. Whatever the reasons are, having a missing tooth or missing teeth can change the way you look. In fact, it can also be a cause of embarrassment. Fortunately, with advances in dentistry and technology, you can get a replacement for your missing teeth. The introduction of dentures and dental implants or teeth implants has made a significant impact on the dental health care field. Of course, it would be a great relief to get a replacement though prosthetics is quite different from the teeth you were born with.

People have been wondering and debating as to which prosthetic intervention is best. Are dentures better compared to dental implants? Both prosthetic interventions cost money and affect a person's physical appearance as well as emotional well being. You must evaluate them carefully to be able to choose the best prosthetics. Consider the basic benefits and drawbacks of teeth implants versus dentures.

Dentures

Dentures were developed first. We are more familiar with this type of prosthetic solution. Dentures are a lot cheaper than dental implants and the process of creating the prosthetic teeth is also faster. After a couple of visits, you can go home with the molded prosthetic. Another advantage of dentures is that, basically, you can have dentures regardless of your jaw structure or physical health. On the other hand, dentures may pose problems in terms of comfort level or ease of use. Since dentures are removable and sometimes they move a little bit, people may have difficulties chewing their food. For the same reason, some people often suffer from humiliation when their dentures detach and fall out of their mouth suddenly.

Dental Implants

Dental implants, on the other hand, are more securely rooted because they are implanted into the bone socket. The jawbone anchors the prosthetic tooth, which allows the dental implant to appear and feel like natural tooth. With dental implants, you can eat far more comfortably and the possibility of having the prosthetic tooth detached accidentally is eliminated. Though teeth implantation is actually a type of surgery and you pay more for it, there is a way around these drawbacks. With sedation dentistry, you can relax in comfort during the dental procedure. You may even forget sitting on the dental chair for a longer time than usual. If you think you cannot afford to pay for it, you can ask local cosmetic dentists (also known as implant dentists if they offer dental implants) about financing plans.

For more information about dental implants, visit your local cosmetic dentist. He or she should be able to help you decide if it is appropriate for you. Most cosmetic dentists provide free consultation and answer any of your dental implant questions.
