Compare The Three Kinds Of Home Gyms?

By:

So you want a home gym? Chances are you might already have one if you go by my definition of "home gym."

Home fitness gyms can vary dramatically in size, equipment (or no equipment), and function. A home gym is simply a designated space for working out. The 3 types of home fitness gyms are the following:

1. Floor-Based Home Gym

A bare gym studio is nothing other than open floor space where you can work out and that you do work out not using any weight training equipment or cardio equipment. An example is a stretching space or a place you do what is all the rage - the workouts that solely use your body-weight.

2. Fitness Machine Home Gym

A fitness machine home gym is a space dedicated to your treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike, or similar type of cardio equipment. You don't need multiple machines to qualify as a home gym ... in my view.

3. Weight Training Home Gym

When you visit fitness equipment retailers the "home gym" section is filled with resistance training gym equipment. These types of gyms are the contained resistance training systems or free weight equipment you can buy. I classify weight resistance training home gyms as three types:

(a) The newest type of weight lifting equipment uses the lever-arms with weights attached to them. Which muscle group you target depends on the seating arrangement and direction of the arm. Seated pushing movements workout your chest (away from you) and shoulders (pushing above your head). You can squat with lever arms placed on top of your shoulders and then you squat up and down. Of course the resistance is created by putting weights on the arms.

(b) Traditional weight lifting machines. Most commercial gyms have a machine area where the resistance is created with cables looping through pulleys and attached to a stack of weight plates.

(c) Free weights. Free weights are the old school home gyms. All you need is a barbell for a bare-bones free weight gym. Most free weight home gyms have a dumbbell set, a bench, and a barbell set. Of course you can add other items such as a squat rack and leg press to fill out your free weight home gym.

Whatever your workout space contains in your home, if you designate it as a place to pump iron, run on a treadmill, or do yoga, you have a home gym.

The wonderful thing about a home gym is you can always add more equipment and workout videos to create a bigger and better gym.
