Compare Gas And Electricity: The Indispensible Partners For Human Survival

By:

Energy is defined as the capacity for doing work. There are many different types of it; people need calories from food for instance. But apart from the latter life sustaining one, none other forms of energy are important to us than those of gas and electricity. In a way, they even facilitate our caloric consumption by delivering it -via gas- and preserving it -via electricity. One does not exist freely without the others influence. To create gas we need electricity. To create electricity we need gas. In some cases, their energetic properties have fused into a synergy where they each share the workload, as is with hybrid vehicles. But still we need to compare gas and electricity.

However, gas and electricity are not twin forms of energy. Crude oil, the principal elixir used to progress and maintain our societies is more closely related to gas than electricity; even though the last is still affected by the black liquids pricing. Gas was first used in a locomotive vehicle in 1886 after Karl Benz produced and patented the very first internal-combustion engine. Gasoline and diesel, usually used under the same moniker, have ever since become a prime resource in daily our lives; so much so that we spend an average of two thousand dollars a year on gas alone. Vehicular gas that is. To compare gas and electricity is a good idea for it gives us a chance to single out the better of two alternatives.

Natural gas is another source of energy some of us use. Some of us, because gas of that type -unless its not for the family barbecue- is completely shunned by a great number of people; to the extent that some wont even use it to grill. This is due in part to the fumes highly flammable properties. In some cases it is cheaper to use gas lines for certain appliances than electricity. Yet as stories abound with major incidents involving gaseous explosions, the bulk of the world steers towards electricity. An energy form that can partially and at times completely substitute gas powered machines. So, it is very significant to compare gas and electricity.

Electricitys story dates back to the seventeenth century when it became a popular experiment. First consumed by your average household in 1882 by a handful of 85 customers, it is now supplied to all corners of the world. Their progenitor includes smoggy coal burning plants; advance nuclear power plants; to the safer and cleaner wind powered turbines. The sun really is the best source for harnessing electrical energy. By 2008 solar power plants supplied 0.02 percent of the words electrical use. Yet this infinite source of energy has great potential, for if exploited effectively, one hour of sunlight can greatly meet the requirements of the worlds demand. Exploited effectively meaning 100 percent. The problem lies in the fact that photovoltaic cells are currently less than 41 percent effective; unable to absorb most of the suns energy in the process.

We compare gas and electricity and choose the better for the reduced cost and easy usage. However, before we try to compare gas and electricity we should appreciate that these two forms of energy will continue to dominate our energy consumption hand in hand.
