Communicating Your Needs To Your Web Designer

By:

The main problem that arises between a conversation between you and your web designer is the difficulty of relaying the ideas across. You speak all about the content and purpose of your website, he talks about the color palette and all these programming stuffs. This article explains how to get your ideas across to the web designer you want to hire.

During the hiring process, you look to several portfolios of possible web designer and you decided to hire this specific person. Why? Because you believe that his design will be the most fitting with your content and will impress the whole internet community.

So now what? Remember, from the time you decided to work with this specific web designer, you will have two great minds thinking about your project and sometimes, it can get very frustrating when you wanna explain what youre thinking regarding the layout and the overall design of your website. You have this picture in your mind but you cannot verbalize it eloquently. This is the biggest challenge between you and the final outcome. No matter how talented your web designer is, if you cannot discuss your ideas with him properly, using the programming-esque language, more often than not he could not interpret exactly what you are trying to say.

There are two possible scenarios you may deal with:
1. You have the idea of the content of your projects but you dont know how should it look on the page.
2. You know what the content will be and you have the layout in your mind but you dont know how to do the programming for you to be able to materialize that layout.

Both cases requires you to explain carefully and as much as possible precisely your thoughts to the web designer. One can think that being in the second scenario could be a little lot better than the first one; however, the opposite is true in the real life. Sometimes, it is easier to give the web designer the freedom to conceptualize the design for your content. You may find that explaining the purpose of your website and trust the designers interpretation than talk to him about the color palette you wanted or the specific ungeometrical shape your website header may look like.

For both cases, the same approach could be used but I would suggest some modifications for each scenario. If you already have a design template coming from another website in mind, be sure to give the sites URL to the web designer. This will give him a more concrete idea of what you want. However, it is suggested that you give more than one website as an example in order for it to be easier for the web designer to understand your idea without using the technicals. Chances are that you wont find a website that precisely similar to whats in your mind because you dont want to copy a design in the first place. Research on different layouts before you present your sample to your designer. This will keep you both in the same track.

Another important thing is that, as much as you want your designer hear your thoughts and idea, it is as equally important for you to listen to his inputs. Designing is his thing. If you cant understand what hes saying, clarify it. Do not finish the conversation unless both of you understand what each other mean.

You must always remember that you hired a professional designer because you want your website to be professional looking. It is advised that you choose a web designer who you can trust with the final outlook of your site. After all, you are paying him to make your website presentable.

It is OK to require your website designer to get approval every step of the way so you can examine if little goals are met. Also, be honest if you dont want something and wanted it to be changed.

On Cost:

You have to agree on what needs to be done and the web designer has given you a price quote. Simple changes and fixes are usually included on the qute. However sometimes, major changes or revisions may require additional charge. Make sure that the agreement on cost should be defined properly, what services are included and what is a revision or a short fix. Also, it is important to note on how many changes you can make before incurring additional costs
