Communicating Options During A Grid Blackout

By:

What would be like, trying to communicate when a nation's grid switch has been turned off. It would force anyone to reconsider their choice of talk devices and media sources. This is just what happened in Egypt not too long ago, bringing everything to a halt by a mere order from the government leaders. No one would argue; the feat was impressive, to say the least. It did not however, shut everyone down, which raises more interesting questions.

As wide spread as the blackout was, most all satellite internet and phones users were the uninterrupted and still maintained their chatter. The nice thing about these services is that they operate off the main grid anyway and independent of the channels used for regular cell, internet and cable service. It all comes down to, if I own the satellite, I can turn it off; if I have an agreement with the owner of the satellite I'm using, they have to turn it off at my request, if they want to do business in my country and its citizens.

Satellite phone are not the only way to communicate. Some options are less than high tech. When all else fails, firing up the ole dependable Ham radio for an ageless means of communication. These shortwave radio dependables have a very impressive service record, going all the way back to the second world war. They ran off battery power and were really hard to seek out an destroy. Many believe that the licenses requirement in the US is just to keep track of where they are, even tho they aren't used much anymore.

Another very effective local means of communication is the famous CB radio. They have some very attractive features; cheap and easy to use. They are however at a disadvantage due to the short distance they reach, if you desire to go greater distances. Another rather cumbersome method of getting messages out of the country, became famous during the 1979 Iranian revolution. It involved cassettes and tape recorders that were passed on to the proper people.

As fast, sometimes friendly and convenient as the internet is, it is great to know that our computers are capable of so much more in the way of communication options without needing the internet. In case you are unaware of how networks such as the Ad-Hoc work, you can easily research this set-up and what all you can enjoy. It links wireless routers, PC's, laptops and cell phones into a network when set-up properly. Some of these networks are huge and silently work in our midst.
