Communicating Face To Face

Strong communication skills are looked upon greatly by successful people. It can contribute 50%-80% of our total communication. Body language must be read in context, congruence and clusters. Depending on culture and other backgrounds it can be useful to understand more fully. It is important to learn how to use body language and read the singnals better.

Using the Eyes

The eyes give people away. You can see what someone will be accessing in their mind by watching where they go to access this information in their eyes. If the person you speak to looks upward they are visualising an image. Left and right is auditory. Downward will indicate that they are either talking to themselves or feeling something about what you said to them. To work out if its constructed or remembered you must ask them questions first to work out how they access their information. By asking them questions you know they must remember you can work out where their remembered side is. Then by finding this out you can find the constructed side also. Be careful with assuming people are lying though.

Eye Gaze

To help people feel comfortable look at them as much as they do to you. Some cultures or types of people do not look you in the eye. To do this may be offensive. Mirror the other person and the length they look at you and you should be right.

Handshakes- Whats the best type

Handshakes are a greeting and should be treated as so. To make the other person comfortable mirror their handshake and body language.

Matching the other persons handshake will help build rapport. If you handshake adds or detracts strength to the greeting it may show a dominant attitude or a submissive one. You want to hold your ground and match the others greeting.

A lot of different cultures dont even shake hands, so by putting your hand out to shake you may cause issues within the relationship. Some people wave or bow so again for a perfect greeting and to make the other person comfortable its good to greet them as they would like to be greeted.

Using your Gestures

Use gestures if the person you are speaking to uses them. This will help in the conversation. Only use them to illustrate and convey meanings. Do not have them out too much as this may confuse the communication. Be careful as some gestures may mean different things to different people. Mirror the other persons gesturing and you will communicate more effectively.

Negative Body Language Signals

If you see barriers across the body like books, desks, chairs in front, or even arms these things can tell you that someone is either hiding from confrontation or could have a negative viewpoint. People may distant themselves by putting things in front of their body or crossing their arms and legs. This could all indicate negativity or non-action. Watch the feet as they also point to what the person really is interested in.

Getting along with people

The secret to building rapport with people again is mirroring their type and style of communication. If you can incorporate the way they speak, the speed, their body language and other verbal communication similarities they are using you will also communicate with them on their level. This will build rapport and the similarities will help you in your communication. Do no copy accents, personal disabilities etc. It is not about copying but bringing their communication on in yours also to help them feel comfortable.

Communicating with people and mirroring behaviour is a great way to build business and personal relationships.
