Common Travel Mistakes In Mexico

Common Travel Mistakes In Mexico

By:

There are a million things to remember when planning a trip to Mexico; at least it can feel that way. Many things will be okay to miss, but there are just a few that will cost much more (in time and money) if not taken care of. For a smooth vacation to Mexico avoid the common mistakes listed below.

1. Forgetting to get travel insurance. Even though you do not want to think about the potential for getting hurt while on vacation, there is always the chance that you could have an accident. If they happen in Mexico, you may be up for some unexpected difficulties, especially if you are in a remote area. Remember, not all hospitals are equal in Mexico. Mexico travel insurance will protect you and your life savings, in the event of a medical emergency while traveling there.

2. Not buying a Mexican car insurance policy. If you plan to drive a vehicle into Mexico, you must have Mexican domiciled car insurance. Your U.S. or Canadian policy will not offer coverage while you are in Mexico. If you are involved in an accident while in Mexico and you don't have a Mexican car insurance policy, you could end up spending time in a Mexican jail. This makes for a very unpleasant way to spend your vacation.

3. Forgetting to buy a road-map of Mexico. If you are driving to Mexico, you might expect it to be somewhat like driving in the U.S. or Canada, with lots of signs telling you where to exit and other travel information. This is a mistake. Roads are typically not well marked in Mexico and in addition, road maps are practically non-existent. If you do not have a road map and are driving in Mexico, it could make for a very adventurous vacation.

4. Not carrying any cash. ATM's can be few and far between in Mexico, especially in more rural areas. Unfortunately, it is often the case that a town's lone ATM functions only half the time and is out of money the other half. Always carry enough cash to get you where you are going and have an emergency fund stashed away in case of an emergency.

5. Assuming everyone speaks English. While it's true that many people in Mexico speak English, it is equally common to encounter areas where not a single person does. Be prepared with some basic working Spanish or at least a small translation book or device. Knowing basic directions, how to order food and how to determine where a bathroom is located are among the things to know or be able to quickly determine the Spanish translation for.

If you have a sense of adventure and don't mind challenges, you find most of these mistakes easily surmountable. As long as you are prepared with enough cash to get you where you need to go and a quick wit, navigating the wilds of Mexico should be a fun and challenging adventure of a lifetime.
