Common Pests & Measures To Prevent Them

Pests are organism and are an integral part of the natural ecosystem. They have certain functions to perform but the problem arises when they invade our houses. The most common pests are Ants, Bed Bugs, Bees, Beetles, Birds, Cockroaches, Dust Mites, Earwigs, Fleas, Flies, Gophers, Lice, Mice, Mosquitoes, Moths, Opossums ,Pill Bugs, Rats, Spiders, Stink Bugs, Ticks, Voles, Wasps etc.

Below is a description of some common pests and the threats they pose:
Ants: Ants are insects which are quite helpful for the surroundings however they cause nuisance when they share our house.
Effects:
They are not harmful for our health however they contaminate our food by the bodily waste they leave.
Some species of ants may even sting which is extremely painful.
They may even weaken the foundation of our houses by digging tunnels in the wood.

Bed Bugs: They are ectoparasites which are generally found in beds, couches, trains, planes etc.
Effects:
They feed on human blood. Although they do not cause diseases but their bites may become red and itchy.

Cockroaches: They are found in warm, humid and dark places such as bathrooms, kitchen, basements, around drains and sewers.
Effects:
Cockroaches inhabit dirty areas and then move around our homes spreading lots of bacteria and germs.
They contaminate food by casting-off their skin and waste products.
Their waste causes allergic reactions, asthma and other diseases.

Mosquitoes: They stay in soft, moist soil or standing water sources.
Effects:
They spread deadly diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, viral fever etc.

Spiders: They are eight-legged organisms which usually inhabit cellars or deserted places.
Effects:
Some Spiders bite to protect themselves.
Some Spiders bites can be poisonous.
A spider bite can cause symptoms such as red ring around the bite followed by fever, nausea, vomiting, sweating, headache, breathing problems, cramps, muscle aches, chills, nausea etc.


Preventive Measures:

Get rid of standing water as lots of pests like mosquitoes, termites and ants are found near moisture.
Ensure that there are no holes or crevices in the floor or walls as pests may enter our houses through them.
Never store building materials and firewood near to home as pests tend to like to build their nests in them.
Cover the doors and windows using fine mesh to stop pests from entering houses.
It is safe to keep garbage bins covered and should be emptied on a regular basis.
For disease causing Pests it is considered most appropriate to contact a pest management professional due to the health hazard they can cause.
