Lots of people have troubles dropping off to sleep in the evening, often because their brains keep running at full-speed even if they really feel physically drained. I used to have problems dropping off to sleep in the evening, the good news is I'm out in minutes - possibly even seconds - of the light going out. Allow me to share six techniques that have helped me reach that point:

Have a regular sleep routine. This process gets your mind and body to a routine. My light is out somewhere within 9:45 and 10:15 pm every night. I realize that might seem ridiculously early for some people, but up here in northern New England people seem to go to bed and wake up earlier compared to other places I've lived.

Stay away from reading fiction before going to bed. I really like an excellent novel, but fiction induces your imagination and does not help you relax your mind and get to sleep. Before I adopted this process, I can't tell you how many times I'd stay conscious late in order to complete a chapter or perhaps a whole book. After which my mind would always be enthusiastic about the book when I switched off the light. Now, I pick nonfiction instead. Yes, nonfiction is usually interesting, however it rarely gets my mental energy going like a good thriller. Mental energy isn't what you want when trying to go to sleep.

Take a couple of minutes to calm your mind. This helps stop that ceaseless thinking. Approaches to quiet your mind are: slow and deepen your breathing; think of a few things that went well through out the day and be happy for them; let go the emotions attached with anything that didn't go well; stop consciouslywondering about things. That last one methods to stop trying thinking about any issues you have, and prevent consciously putting your attention in them. If anything remains to be in your thoughts, jot it down in a notepad close to the bed and resolve to manage it tomorrow. This is actually a significant step because if you have not released something that's on your mind before you decide to try to get to sleep, you will end up replaying it over and over unless you have extremely good control of your thoughts.

Stay away from any form of caffeine after 1:00 pm in the afternoon. Absolutely no coffee, decaf, tea or soda with caffeine. If you're susceptible to the effects of caffeine, it will make it harder for you to quiet your brain when you wish to rest. If I have a Coke at three in the afternoon, I am going to feel tired but unable to sleep until midnight. (Another note: I can also always tell if there is MSG in my Chinese dinner simply because my heart is going to be thumping and I'm going to be wide awake watching the ceiling at 1 am.)
