Common Edb File Errors And Some Steps To Rectify Them

By:

The EDB files are database files of Exchange Server and they help in preserving a users mailbox. The corruption of EDB files can make the Exchange Server information like emails, calendar, contacts, etc. inaccessible. The dysfunctional EDB files can even stop the working of entire exchange database. Accordingly various errors flash on to the screen JET engine error, device failure, malicious attack, server downtime, etc. In this article, we will discuss some common EDB file errors and steps to restore the Exchange Server.

Error -327 (0xfffffeb9)

The error 0xfffffeb9 hits the exchange Database when a bug attacks the Exchange Database or if there is any hard disk crash. This error can damage the page order of Exchange Database.

Error -501 (0xfffffe0b)

Error -501 signifies that there is some serious problem in the transaction log.

Error -510 (0xfffffe02)

0xfffffe02 error flashes on Exchange Server when the Log disk is full or hard disk is beyond access.

Error -514 (0xfffffdfe)

This Error appears when a particular log file is developed with another version.

Error -515 (0xfffffdfd), Error -530 (0xfffffdee) and Error -531 (0xfffffded)

These errors are the result of inconsistent log files and log signatures. The removed log files, multiple restorations are the common reasons for these errors.

Error -519 (0xfffffdf9)

Error -519 is common with Exchange Server 2003 which supports the log files having a sequence of 1,000,000 per storage group.

Error -532 (0xfffffdec)

Error 532 signifies that the checkpoint file is inconsistent with the transaction log files.

Error -537 (0xfffffde7)

This error is the result of EDB and STM files inconsistency.

Use the Eseutil and ISInteg utilities for repairing the Exchange Database:

Eseutil can be located at C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Bin in Exchange Server. It functions along with the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE), Exchange Database (EDB) files, STM (Streaming) files and log files. It has been devised to give various commands like Defragmentation: /D; Repair: /P; Restore: /C; Recovery: /R; Integrity: / G; File Dump: /M; Checksum: /K; Copy File: /Y, etc.

ISInteg is also a Microsoft based utility which is used after running the Eseutil utility. It can repair various errors of Exchange Server. Interrelated tests can be conducted with the ISInteg tool. It scans & rectifies the database errors.

You can use the registry Editor for noting down the error. Now open the Eseutil.exe utility for assessing the consistency of private and public EDB files. ENTER the command for opening the private & Public EDB files:

c:\exchsrvr\bin>eseutil /mh ..\mdbdata\priv.edb

c:\exchsrvr\bin>eseutil /mh ..\mdbdata\pub.edb

Then send the resultant to a text file by typing:

c:\exchsrvr\bin>eseutil /mh ..\mdbdata\priv.edb > mypriv.txt

c:\exchsrvr\bin>eseutil /mh ..\mdbdata\pub.edb > mypub.txt

Try the eseutil /mh command for full recovery. Try the hard repair if any discrepancy is there:

c:\exchsrvr\bin>eseutil /p /ispriv for private EDB files

c:\exchsrvr\bin>eseutil /p /ispub for public EDB files

Eradicate the Temp.edb, all .log and .chk files in ExchSrvr\Mdbdata and again verify the databases at Information Store Service. Now defragment the Private & Public Edb Files with eseutil /d command:
Now use the ISInteg utilities to repair the Exchange database. If the database has not been repaired then use the Kernel for Exchange Server Recovery. This restore Exchange Server tool quickly salvages the data from corrupt EDB files.

The author is a Technology Reviewer with 2 decades of experience. He has discussed about the common Exchange server errors and their rectifications. To Restore Exchange Server a user can try the Eseutil and ISInteg utilities. If these tools fail to perform the MS Exchange Recovery then he would have to use a specifically designed software for data recovery.
