Common Causes Of Hearing Loss

By:

Hearing loss is such a common problem that more than 30 million Americans suffer from some degree of it. Many people believe that old age is the only thing that causes a loss of hearing, but there are actually many factors that can contribute to it. In fact, 65 percent of the people who suffer from this common problem are younger than 65 years old. Here are a few of the known causes.

It is true that aging can lead to a person experience difficulty with certain sounds. It is estimated that one-third of Americans experience this problem between the ages of 65 and 75, according to the National Institutes of Health. While becoming older might have something to do with it, it is presumed that an even more predominate factor in hearing loss other than being a hereditary trait is being constantly exposed to noises that are too loud and harsh on your eardrums. It is usually not a good idea to listen to loud noises all the time because it could be very bad for your ears. It is also very common for hearing problems to be hereditary. Many people are born with this problem every day and work with their doctors to see if surgery or hearing aids could be helpful.

Another common cause is a buildup of wax in your ears. Having earwax buildup can cause you to have trouble hearing without realizing why youre having trouble with it. It can also be such a minimal affect that you dont even realize youre having trouble. Your ears need to be able to conduct sounds and having a wax buildup in your ears can cause them not to be able to do that successfully. Make sure to clean your ears regularly to avoid this problem. If you dont feel comfortable using q-tips to clean your ears, try using a washcloth to gently clean the inside. If that also makes you uncomfortable, ask your doctor what the best way for you to clean your ears would be so you can avoid getting wax buildup and in turn avoid experiencing a loss of hearing.

You may not even realize you have a wax buildup until you clean your ears and start to hear what you have been missing. You might be suffering from hearing problems if you think people you are talking to always mumble or if you constantly have a hard time hearing people when youre talking with groups. Its also an obvious sign if you have to turn the volume up on the television or when youre listening to the radio. If other people think the volume is at a good level and you still dont feel like you can hear it very well, you might want to try cleaning your ears to get rid of wax buildup. If youre still having a problem with the volume not being loud enough, you should consider visiting your doctor to have a hearing exam. Remember, it is a common problem that many people dont even realize theyre suffering from.
