Common Causes Of Hearing Loss In Adults The Abcs Of Hearing Loss

By:

Many adults suffer from hearing loss. Because this loss can be a gradual one, often times people dont realize they have a deficit until they visit a doctor and a test is administered. Others suffer from a constant ringing in the ears due to subjection to constantly loud noise such as air planes and playing music at high volumes.

Other common causes of hearing loss in adults are: diseases, infections, and certain medications. Hearing loss also occurs during the course of the normal aging process. Many conditions are accompanied by a ringing in the ears, as described above. This is commonly known as tinnitus and is very common among adults. It is important to note that tinnitus can occur by itself and, therefore, may not be a result of disease, infection or trauma to the ear canal. It can, and often does, occur without any hearing loss, but is often a distraction to those who experience it, especially when they are in a very quiet environment and can hear only the ringing in their ears.

Otosclerosis is one cause of hearing loss in adults that involves the middle ear capsule. This disease specifically affects the movement of the stapes, one of the three tiny bones in the middle ear.

Another cause is Meniere's disease which affects the membranous inner ear and is characterized by deafness, dizziness, and ringing in the ear.

Certain medications that are taken on a regular basis to manage a variety of diseases and conditions can be damaging to the auditory system. This is sometimes a long-term side effect and might not show up for quite some times after taking a particular medication. In other cases, the damage can occur rather quickly. It is important to remember these medications may affect everyone differently and not everyone who takes them will suffer from hearing loss.
