Commercial Zip Line - What Makes Commercial Zip Line Rides Safe?

By:

The Necessity for A Zip Line Standard

Who inspects these things anyway and just what criteria do they use to gauge safety and see if a zip line ride passes?

Actually, this very topic is now being talked about by great minds in the commercial zip line trade who are putting their thoughts together as we post this.

Mike Teske, director of technical services for Skyline Eco-Adventures, is leading a task force who's objective is to establish
"criteria for the design, manufacture, installation, testing performance, operation, maintenance, inspection and auditing of zip lines, ropes courses and challenge courses that are specifically intended for concession, commercial recreation or amusement purposes" (ASTM WK34049)

A Standard For The Commercial Zip Line Is In The Works

According to press release dated 12 January 2012, ASTM international and the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) will be working together to create a new standard, ASTM WK34049, Practice for Special Requirements for Aerial Adventure Courses.

The need for this new standard is being triggered due to the recent growing trend for commercial zip line rides and other aerial adventure courses.

That the safety of commercial zip line rides is now being concentrated on by the standards industry is great. For our audience, it's better yet to appreciate that Soaring Eagle Zip Lines already meets and exceeds much of the safety criteria being discussed and spelled out in these sessions.

Soaring Eagle Zip Lines and Safety

Issues of safety associated with standard zip line rides could make them high liability risks. The greatest contributing factors of zip line safety risks can be found in the human element. With each additional point of human intervention in the process, safety risk grows. Consider the quantity of potential human interactions within the standard zip line ride process that has a crew on both top and bottom of the ride, harnessing and fitting guests, coaching riders, loading and unloading riders, and inspecting and handling gear. Ride safety is degraded when the probability of operator oversight is increased because even the most reliable operator is susceptible to stress from repetitive and labor intense harnassing and fitting of each rider. In some instances with conventional zip line rides, guests are asked to carry the ride gear and harness which allows the unit they carry to go outside the control of the ride operators and exposes the resort or facility to any or all of the associating liabilities along with the risk of undetected damage to occur during transport.

The benefit with Soaring Eagle Zip Lines is that the ride requires just one easily trained operator, hence the largest part of probable human fault has been eliminated. Before the ride will operate, restraints are locked and electronically monitored by two proximity sensors. A safe and comfortable landing on every cycle is assured with Soaring Eagles Patent Pending spring braking mechanism. In the industry, you won't find a safer zip line ride.
