A commercial awning is an architectural entity that will provide decoration, identity and mainly protection from the weather. It is typically supported from the building itself, to which it is meant for. It comprises of a skeletal structure which is very rigid but lightweight and fabric is stretched, which would shelter doors, windows, decks and driveways.

The canvas of the commercial awnings composes of a fabric woven from cotton, acrylic or polyester yarn, or a polyester fabric that is laminated from vinyl. This fabric is tightly stretched over a lightweight structure made up of iron, steel or aluminum. This structure is confirmed in such a way that it is planar frame, space frame or a truss. They also have support arms that can be set vertically down on the floor or angled back against the wall of the house. These support arms provide extra support, which is much needed for buildings in windy areas. Awnings which have are motorized, have no vertical supports. Instead, they are made up of lateral arms, which retract. This creates a shaded area which is unobstructed. These awnings operate by an electric motor that is placed inside the rolling bar of the awning. The awning will open and close at the touch of a switch which is mounted on the wall or a wireless remote control. Modern awnings are constructed from fabrics like corrugated fiberglass, corrugated polycarbonate, aluminum or other materials. High winds can cause damage to the awnings, and thus a lot of awnings are provided wind sensors so that the awning may retract automatically in case of high winds.

Awnings can be very beneficial for businesses. Restaurants can use these awnings to extend their space outdoors, which can easily be used for more seating space, and the customers will also enjoy having their food outdoors. Commercial buildings can use awnings to print information regarding name, business and address and thus awnings acts as a signboard or billboard and also protects from rain and snow, breaking the rain and providing shade.
There have been studies, which show that the use of awnings can actually save on-air conditioning costs by keeping the inside temperatures cooler because they prevent the sun from shining through the doors and windows. Lab tests have proven that it can be as much as 20 degrees cooler under the canopy of the awning. The best thing about commercial awnings is that they can be very easily custom ordered according to the specifications of where it is to be fitted and the kind of fabric the client desires.
