Come And Enjoy The Splendor Of The Tranquil Town Of Gosford Australia

Gosford is often referred to as the "Gateway to the Central Coast." It is an good description, because no matter if you're traveling by car, train or even by sailboat from Sydney, it is likely that Gosford is going to be your first stop along the scenic Central Coast of New South Wales. The city of Gosford is also the administrative capital of Gosford Shire. As such, it is an important regional center in one of the fastest developing regions of Australia.

Until the mid 1980s, Gosford Shire was a relatively quiet part of New South Wales and was technically categorized as "Country New South Wales." It was mainly known as a stopover between Sydney and Newcastle. A lot of the permanent population in the area was made up of retirees. During the summer months, the population grew with vacation makers from Sydney, but besides that, the locals had all the magnificent beaches, waterways and bushlands all to themselves.

The change to the entire Central Coast area came rapidly after the opening of the F3 Freeway in 1986-1987. This freeway, part of the most important highways in Australia, National Route 1, cut traveling times from Sydney to Gosford in half, which made it possible for Sydney commuters to enjoy the laid back Central Coast lifestyle. An absolute explosion of development occurred over the following decade. Today, Gosford isn't considered to be "country" New South Wales and is more sometimes called a bedroom community of Sydney.

In spite of the large expansion within the region, there are still lots of wide open spaces in Gosford Shire. While it's true that the most popular beaches like Avoca Beach and Terrigal get extremely crowded over the Christmas season, there are such a lot of beaches hidden away across the long Central Coast that it's easy to go back in time and find a quiet beach to sit back and relax. In fact, if the crowds in Avoca Beach get too much for you, it is possible to simply stroll less than a mile up the beach to North Avoca and enjoy a quiet day at the beach there.

Surfers don't need to be convinced of the attractions of the Central Coast. Since the late seventies and early 1980s, the Gosford area has shaped some of the world's best surfers, who honed their skills at the fabulous beaches, points and reef breaks which are spotted over the area. Considering the small numbers of surfers who called the area home back then, it is amazing how many world famous surfers came from the area. Several of these names went on to become some of surfing's superstars. Nowadays, surfing continues to be a tradition the Central Coast is proud of and local clubs like the Avoca Boardriders Club carry on to be where world surfing champions get their start.

The Central Coast has so much to brag about, the "Gateway to the Central Coast", Gosford, is often overlooked. Aside from its many other attractions, Gosford happens to be situated on Brisbane Water, which makes it a sanctuary for boating fanatics. If you would like to see the best of the region, sail from Gosford to Sydney or take a tour to the mouth of Brisbane Water at Umina. This circuitous waterway takes you past charming and interesting towns like Woy Woy, Ettalong and Pretty Beach. From there it's just a short hop over to Palm Beach in Northern Sydney or to Sydney Harbour itself.

Along with the population explosion on the Central Coast came an growth in tourism. Fortunately, a lot of the new residents opened up hotels, motels and other facilities to cater to the influx of tourists. Today, you'll be able to stay in a luxurious hotel in Terrigal or find a quaint and affordable Gosford accommodation within a stone's throw from the beach or Brisbane Water. If you're looking for fun and relaxation in the sun, you'll find a lot more than you are looking for in Gosford and Gosford Shire.
