Like Baguio up north, Batanes also have its own roster of talented visual artists that are bent on displaying their works of art alongside the natural grandeur of the province. A group called The Yaru nu Artes Ivatan is composed of 4 young artists that are considered gems in their field. With the sole intention of inspiring the younger generation of Ivatans to love and create art, not only for themselves, but also to continue the colorful heritage of their tribe.
Starting off with the first Ivatan to be offered a full scholarship in the most prestigious university in the country, for the degree of Fine Arts, Olan Gonzales. He is the eighth out of 10 artistic siblings, and was tagged as a legend because of painting a portrait of Jesus Christ when he was temporarily blind as a child.
Young Jaypee Portez uses a style that serves as his stamp on his paintings. With the use of circles, he replicates the intricate details of Batanes, from its rolling hills up to the Ivatans jewelries. A much-sought-after representational and surrealist painter, Xavier Abelador is one of the artists in Batanes who completed formal university training. While in school, Xavier received many distinctions from organizations and competitions such as Art Petron, and PLDT-DPC. Lastly, Javier Ponce started painting when he was just in grade school. Later on, he honed his skills when he entered college and began to lead a life with brushes, palettes and paints.
These young painters however, do not keep their skills to themselves. In order to spread art across Batanes, they conduct workshops and tutorials to Ivatans to further pique their interest in art. Services such as public art projects where their output is incorporated in the whole of Batanes through the streets, offices and other public places, arts training which includes One- week intensive classroom and practical trainings on mural paintings, studio workshops and participation in national arts festivals.
Their artworks can also be commissioned privately, and they usually transcend distance. They can be seen in both national and international galleries, even posing as private collection, from Manilas Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Museo Pambata, to the Headlands Center for the arts in San Francisco, United States. Also under their belt are works from Pacita Abad Center for the Arts, the Karasic Foundation, the Department of Education, Department of Trade and Industry, plus more various local government units. Not only that, the group also completed projects with the esteemed Philippine High School for the Arts and the Tourism Council.
