College Education Is Not A Dream Anymore In India

According to the English language dictionary, the term College is explained as an institute of higher learning. The word college is derived from Latin word collegiums that mean association or partnership. The institute provides education on general and liberal subjects. There are also colleges for technical and professional learning as well. Generally, in most countries of the world, the college is a part of the university. In some countries, like America, the term college and the university are interchangeable.
Subjects Taught At the College:
Students can opt for liberal art, social science and pure science subjects at the college level. Vocational subjects and technical topics are also taught at specialized colleges. The liberal arts subjects include literature, languages, history and philosophy. These subjects develop the learners intellectual capabilities and rational thought process.
The branches or sub-disciplines of social sciences taught in the colleges are anthropology, archaeology, psychology, communication, political science, linguistics, economics, international relations and sociology.
Many colleges teach professional subjects like business administration, financial management, pharmacy, and agriculture and media studies.
The College in the Indian Education System:
In India, students can join a college after passing the XIIth class or higher secondary examination. The braches taught are science, arts and social sciences. These colleges offer a Bachelors degree in the relevant course selected.
Almost, all the Indian states have their regional universities and all the universities have a body of colleges teaching all or only one branch of education. The college conducts exams at the year end, though some colleges also feature the semester system. More than hundred universities are part of the higher education system in India and all the universities have about the same number of colleges.
The first and foremost college in the country, affiliated to the Travancore University was the C. M. S. College in Kottayam in the state of Kerala. The college was established in the year 1817 and formerly called as the Hindu College. Subjects in branches liberal arts and pure sciences were taught here. The Scottish Church College in Calcutta was another reputed college in the country established in 1830. This was the first missionary body teaching western style education.
Apart from the colleges under the regional universities, there are also autonomous institutions in the country that offers their own degrees. The autonomous bodies of higher education are as follows:
Indian Institute of Management
Indian Statistical Institute
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research
Indian Institute of Science
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
Apart from these, in the field of medical science, the All India Institute of Medical Science, popular as AIIMS, located in New Delhi is a premier college for medicine learning.
For law learning in India, the best college is the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) located in Bangalore.
The College and Women Education in India:
Higher learning for the Indian women was restricted due to regional and social customs prevalent in the country in the pre-independence period. The country had limited the role of the women only for managing the household duties. Higher education was only for men in the country. Activists and social reformers fought for the equality of rights of women in India. To encourage higher education in the country, many colleges for women were set up.
