Collageneration

Collageneration

Collagen proteinthe bodys glueis much used nowadays in the health supplement and beauty industry to erase wrinkles and bring back the softness and suppleness of skin. There are three collagen products sold in the market that can increase skin collagen: through creams, injections or food supplements (tablets and drink).

Collagen creams for the skin are not really very effective since collagen molecules are too large to be absorbed by the skin. Nowadays dermatologists recommend tretinoin creams instead. These are absorbed by the skin and, although they is marketed mainly as a skin conditioner, they can also increase collagen production in the treated area.

Injecting collagen can fill up the skin and make it appear plump. Examples are lip injections to make a desirable pout (remember Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider?)but only for a short time. The body absorbs the injected collagen after a few weeks so you may need frequent injections to maintain the plumpness.

As for food supplements, these are mainly taken from animal and fish skin, joints, and bones. There are 29 identified types of collagen. Most abundant in the skin s is type I, III, VII and XXIX. The collagen processed from animals and fish are mostly taken from cartilage (hyaline cartilage)type II, also present in eyeball gel. Advertisements for collagen tablets and drinks make it sound like the collagen, once ingested, is used for replenishing the skin immediately and therefore, make ones skin youthful. This is not what actually happens. Collagen tablets and drinks are broken down into component amino acids proline, glycine, and similar non-essential (can be made by the body) amino acids. Then the body decides what to do with them. Naturally youd want the body to produce more collagen.

But what tells the body to produce more collagen in ones old ageand, most importantly, can we tell it to produce more collagen?

No one knows at the moment if this is even possible. Some think that we can only increase collagen production if we can trick the body into thinking it has been injured (like, in the formation of scar tissue). Some suggest using red light to stimulate collagen production (based on the work of Nobel Prize winner Niels Ryberg Finsen).

Many people recommend healthy living insteadeating healthy foods known to promote collagen production like vitamin-rich fruit and vegetables (vitamin C, among others, are essential for building collagen), garlic, foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (like tuna, sardines, mackerel); no smoking and drinking, enough sleep and exercise. They say you cannot prevent aging, but you can choose to age well, not age disastrously. Which is probably a good advice: healthy living is free. It just needs follow-through.
