Cold Weather And Frozen Water Pipes

By:

When the weather gets cold it can do things to your house like possibly damage to your water pipes. Water damage can be done to your house because the cold can cause pipes to freeze, then bust, and then leak or flood. You may not even know that you have a busted pipe until signs start to show up. When it is cold outside you need to take precautions to make sure pipes are insulated. You can have a busted pipe under the house, inside the house where there is no heat, and on water spigots outside. If you use well water, even your pump water lines can freeze.

You need to make sure the crawlspace of your house is closed up so the cold air, ice, snow, and frost can not get to. When water freezes, it will stop water from getting into the house in certain areas or any at all depending on which line is frozen. If you have a mobile home it can be worse because there is usually only thin underpinning that covers the crawlspace. The cold can still get in there if it is not covered all the way or if there is gaps between the metal sheet. You have to be sure the there is not gaps, you can screw then together, you can lay brick up against them, or you and get them replaced with something that will not bend easy.

When water pipes get frozen, the water in them expands and causes pressure and the pipe can rupture or become disconnected at a joint. It can cause a flood in your home if it is on the inside or flood under the house. Either way it can cause water damage to set in and damage your things inside your home or damage under the home. This is why you need to protect the pipes to prevent freezing.

You can help prevent this from happening to your home by letting the water drip or run a little over night or all day if it is cold through out the day. You can cover insulate pipes with with heat tape or foam wrappings that will keep them from getting cold so easily. Cold weather can be rough, but you can prepare your house and make regular inspections so you will spot problems quickly. If you get a busted or disconnected pipe, you need to turn off the water and change the pipes. Even if you only have a small leak or spray under the home or in the home, if it it not repaired, it can eventually lead to wood rot and mold damage.
