Cohesive Gel Implants - Longevity And Appearance

By:

Ask any woman who has received breast augmentation surgery about what she would like to see in the future and you'll generally hear the same response from Women from all over the world. What is it that they want? Here it is: they want a safer, longer lasting, and a more visually appealing breast implant that will not require replacement after a dozen years. Some people say the solution has finally arrived in the increasingly popular "cohesive breast implant", also known as "gummy bear implants".

The Gummy Bear Breast Implant was invented in the early 1990s. It has been used worldwide since then except in the United States. Why? Because of the many complications of silicone gel (and the lawsuits and the bankrupt corporations), the FDA decided to have the same type of research study performed on cohesive gel implants as was completed on silicone gel implants. You'll recall that silicone gel implants were studied for almost 14 years before the FDA gave their final approval on the implant for unrestricted use.

So how can a woman living in the United States purchase cohesive breast implants if they are not approved by the FDA? Cohesive gel implants are available but only in the context of the study being performed on them. What does that mean for the woman who wants them? It means she must agree to be a part of the research program.

Cohesive gel implants were originally designed with two primary objectives in mind. One of those objectives was to outperform the standard implant's expected longevity. Silicone and Saline implants are always at risk of rupturing or leaking. This fact becomes more evident the longer the implant has been in place which is why it is recommended that implants be replaced after approximately 10 to 12 years.

The cohesive gel implant was designed to last longer and to reduce the risk of rupturing and leakage. How can it accomplish this? Because the implant is made of cohesive gel; essentially, it is one piece of material rather than a sack filled with a liquid (such as saline implants) or a gel (such as silicone implants). Because the cohesive implant is one unit, it substantially reduces the risk of rupture or leakage because there isn't any material that can leak.

The second objective for cohesive gel implants was to provide a more appealing breast shape that would last for a longer time (maintain its shape). Again, by building an implant that is a single mass of material, it is less likely to lose shape over time.

Preliminary data shows that cohesive gel implants appear to be covering both of their primary objectives, but the data is not conclusive yet.
