Coffee And Creativity At Detour | Ahmedabad

What you see Theres a lot of youthful spunk DeTour Caf in Ahmedabad right from the word go. Sample this. Quoting Detour AhmedabadDouglas Adams, one of their board reads, If we see you smoking, we will assume you are on fire and take appropriate action. Hangout creatively, Free Wi-fi zone and Self-service are the other words that you see around.

The reception is right at the entrance where you are supposed to write down your name and time of entry in a register (something like an internet caf). Also, you have to pay Rs. 30 as cover charge which is valid for three hours. The charge can be used against the food that you buy. The menu card is placed at the reception counter where you place and collect the order from.

What you get DeTour is the brain-child of two youngsters Mrugank Shah and Krisha Nagrecha, who have passed out from Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad and Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology respectively. When Shah and Nagrecha felt Ahmedabad lacked cool places to hang out at, they came up with the idea of DeTour.

DeTour AhmedabadDeTour Caf reflects a lot of creativity. The entire room, which is quite spacious, is done up in white color. On this plain background, you will see splashes of designs and colors. Chairs, tables and low seating sofas with cushions and pillows in blue, yellow, pink and orange colors are laid out on the floor. Paper lamps in beautiful colors are hung all over the place. All these colors blend in with the white walls and make it look interesting. Funny quotes like, We dont allow outside food or drink or monkeys or Strict dress code. Wear a smile find a place on the walls as well. Some are slightly obnoxious too, like Your mother doesnt work here. Please clean up your own mess.

The caf has books of Jeffrey Archer, John Grisham and other writers for your entertainment. Or you can get your laptop and surf the internet for free. If you are creative, you can pick up a pencil and a paper from one of the racks and start sketching or drawing and see it on the walls of the cafe. Creative writing is encouraged too. DeTour has a wall of fame with stick notes of patron messages too.

Is it music that interests you? A guitar has been placed at one corner for you to try. That apart, there are puzzles, Scrabble, UNO, card games, picture games and many more entertainment options. Nagrecha says they have hand-picked such games to help you exercise your mind. The caf also sell a few T-shirts with quotes on them for Rs. 200.

DeTour also organizes photography and painting workshops. They also screen movies on Thursdays. They celebrated the Charlie Chaplin festival once and during the FIFA World Cup, placed an LCD screen and made special arrangements for soccer fans to watch their favorite team.

In terms of refreshments, DeTour offers home-cooked food and sources some stuff like Samosa filling from neighborhood women. Apart from Samosas, you can sample Sandwiches (vegetable cheese, paneer chilli, coleslaw) Pastas, Nachos, Tacos, Mexican turnovers, Pizzas and more. Juices like cranberry, kiwi, saunf, pineapple, and guava are available as well. Mocktails like Dark Fantasy, Pink Fusion and Mediterranean Magic are there too, in addition to the usual hot and cold coffee, tea, soft drinks etc. For desserts they have Chocolate mousse, pastries and brownies. We tried cold coffee, which was not all that great. Wed recommend the Chocolate mousse and Sandwiches here.

Our verdict DeTour fills in the gap of contemporary hubs for youngsters in Ahmedabad. The concept is unique and new. Definitely worth visiting. Even if you are alone and dont know what you do, visit the caf and spend your leisure time doing something creative. The cover charge is nominal and the crowd is young. Parking space is available.
