Clueless Fashion

By:

Today Haley Mlotek and Daniel Reis, of Worn Fashion Journal, put together a fabulous 58 second video montage of all the outfits Cher Horowitz wore in 1995 film, Clueless. Being a twenty-eight year old woman, Clueless was a classic movie of my teens (I still listen to the soundtrack on Spotify all the time). Cher was supposed to be a fashion icon of the time. Some of her most classic pieces were:

1. Yellow tartan uniform:

While Cher was not required to wear a uniform to school, one of the first outfits she wears in the film look an awful lot like one. She pairs the short pleaded skirt, with a blazer in the matching fabric and a yellow cardigan underneath. I wore a forest green tartan skirt to my school when I was about thirteen years old and wish that I kept it. They are very much back in style this season.

2. Simple white Calvin Klein dress:

One of the most loved scenes in the movie is when Cher comes downstairs for her date with Christian wearing a plain white, short form-fitting Calvin Klein dress. Her father is not pleased with the sexiness of her outfit, to say the least. If you've got the body for it, the little white dress is a good alternative to the popular little black dress. It's perfect for a date, cocktail party or dinner out with friends.

3. Black beret:

Cher was as good at accessories as she was at signature pieces. Many people have compared her character's wardrobe and personality to that of Blair Waldorf in today's popular television show, Gossip Girl. Blair does a great job of mixing formal style pieces with bolder ones. She makes a young, girl headband look cool, and a beret appropriate in New York City. Cher does the exact same thing in LA.

4. Leather skirts and silk blouses:

There are a couple of scenes in the film when Cher is wearing a leather skirt. Leather skirts, dresses and shorts came back into style a couple of seasons ago. In these outfits Cher was not trying to look like a rock star, on the contrary, she looked sophisticated and cool. How? Because she didn't pair the leather skirts with combat boots and studded jackets, instead she paired them with wedged loafers and silk blouses.

While Cher's outfits may have inspired teenage girls of the nineties, many of the films characters inspired teenage boys. There was Christian who embodied a typical European, metro-sexual, wearing tight t-shirts, blazers and gelled back hair. There was Murray who sported the homeboy look so many youngsters of the time were into, with baggy jeans worn below his waist, hoodies and baseball hats. And then of course there was Elton, who was all about his sweater vests, loafers and deep voice. Today Elton could probably be seen in sharp navy suit pants, a waistcoat, brogues and a tie-clip.
