In my 26 years of working in the computer industry there have been many things that have changed the way we do business and delivered real benefits. Unfortunately there have been some not so good technologies as well; however all in all technology continues to play a significant role in our work lives.

The most recent and beneficial shift has been the introduction of Cloud Computing services, to my mind it is probably one of the most significant and game changing in terms of agility, flexibility and unparalleled mobility for small to medium business. Things such as ERP, CRM, telephony, email and other less significant applications now give these businesses the opportunity to have information and tools at hand which traditionally would be beyond their budget and infrastructure capabilities. Additionally most of these cloud services take care of the mundane yet costly and typically overlooked services such as hardware and infrastructure maintenance, backup and upgrading.

We now have an environment where 3G and soon 4G services along with free wireless services allow the one man band to have agility, flexibility and mobility. Depending on your business you can also incorporate eCommerce and have it automatically processing business for you while youre busy generating other income. Imagine going to a meeting and taking an order from your client using your notebook or tablet PC that automatically advises you on stock levels and either generates a picking slip or places an order on your supplier. The other advantage is adding staff without having to increase your office size, buy desks, phones etc. Being able to have work from home staff is a huge advantage in terms of your cost base and using the right combination of tools means you know exactly what their up to.
