Clogged Drain Not Brain

By:

Of all the jobs a professional plumber gets called in on, repairing mistakes made by the non-professional homeowner may top the list. Many people, men especially, believe they can fix anything. They may have a certain aptitude for working with their hands, but undertaking a plumbing job is one of the trickiest things to do if you don't know exactly what you're doing.

How About a Little Flood?

For one thing, the non-professional may inadvertently cause a flood in the basement or wherever the water pipes are installed. Or if he manages to get to the strainer in the shower, he may not completely remove the culprit, which is without a doubt hair. Or he may push the hair further down, causing no end of trouble. Of course, he may decide not to remove the hair manually, but to dissolve it with solvents. Mistake. After spending quite a bit of money on Drano, etc., and discovering this doesn't work, he's back to his clogged drain and standing in water up to his knees when he showers.

Having an Unsanitary Shower

If you think you may not be completely clean after taking a shower with a clogged drain, you are right. But there's no need to suffer in this way. Calling in a plumber or a professional drain cleaner when the trouble starts rather than waiting is smart. That's because when you wait, the problem never goes away, it simply get worse. What started out as a slowing moving flow of water down the drain ends up as a clogged drain, which means dormant water and the possibility of unsanitary conditions in your bathroom.

The old snake trick

So next the amateur plumber reaches for his plunger and tries to plunge away the clog. If this works he's lucky, and his self esteem rises even higher than usual. If it doesn't, he may just have made things worse. Next to try comes his handy-dandy snake. This is a piece of tightly wound steel with an auger tip on one end. An auger is a hand tool with a corkscrew shaped bit for boring holes. At the other end of the snake is a crank handle. A snake is an excellent tool for a lot of things, but when it fails, it is time to call in a professional plumber or drain cleaner professional. In the meantime, you'll have to stand in your un-drained bath water and wonder whether your brain is as clogged as your drain.
