Lights and Miniatures: The Awe Factor

Lighting and dollhouses is a little like magic at Christmas time, it adds a tremendous awe factor, but you have to be at the right point to get started. This is the point when you have moved from setting up a miniature house for your kids to expanding this hobby into something more. Lighting your kit can be a fun yet challenging time. In all reality, would we enjoy it if it wasnt a challenge? Lighting is as simple as a wire connection and a on/off switch. And to add upon that there are great step by step instructions that come with most kits to help you along the way. Sure you are going to make mistakes, but you will learn and it will get easier for you. When you start with your first kit, get a small one just so you don't overwhelm yourself, something small and easy. Remember whether you think you can or whether you think you can't you are right.

Design Tricks: Apply a Great Wallpaper Pattern Yourself

Though you may want to paint some of your walls, we recommend that you try wallpaper as it is a great substitute to paint and leaves a great look. Not only will the walls have a cute and distinct pattern, but the job will be done in a fraction of the time. There are many websites online that will give you some great ideas and options with dollhouse wallpaper. Because you are looking to cover a relatively small area, you should look at getting 1 or 2 square feet at a time. You can also print off your own wallpaper. There are websites that will give you free wall paper prints, just start searching for them A great tip is to go to a scrap booking store, they will have sheets cut to your needs with several design choices to fit your needs. As you develop your mad wallpapering skills you will ad contrast, style, connectivitly and a perfect design to your dollhouse kit

Styling by Era

At that moment that you sat back and decided to create your first or next dollhouse you should have had an idea of what it would look like. When you are contemplating your dollhouse design, remember that you are not just picking a room at a time, but the time frame or era in which they were created. This will be your style choice or theme for your house. When you get right down to it, you might have your choice set out for you as there are really only three major era styles in dollhouse furniture. The first is Victorian, a design established in the mid 1800s that will give you old home design from cooking stoves to classic armoires. If you want to stand out or go with a more up to date style, Modern design will give you simplicity, technology, and some great straight lined pieces. The last is Traditional furniture - it is more about functionality than design, giving you the pieces of furniture that you might find in a local store which is great to make a replica, or to just make your dolls feel at home.
An Addition that can make a Big Difference

Everyone likes to tweak there dollhouses from time to time. The last dollhouse that I was making I discovered a great addition that really made my interior stand out. I discovered the importance of having trim around your floor. You can buy many types of dollhouse trim through stores but what I found to be the cheapest and easiest is purchasing a long thin flat piece of balsa wood. I applied this balsa wood to the floor of each of my walls to form a great outline along the bottom. What I found is that they covered up the tiny bumps between the walls and the flooring. Another great thing about the trim is that it covers the edges of the wallpaper and prevents fraying. I realize that this little invention, though not my own, really made my flooring look flush and neat against the wall.
