The secret touch of a great Dollhouse: Lights

You know when you are really serious about this hobby when you start looking at lighting. This is the point when you have moved from setting up a miniature house for your kids to expanding this hobby into something more. Lighting your kit can be a fun yet challenging time. And why shouldn't that challenge encourage us to try? When you break it down, lighting is simply connecting electricity through a wire and a plug. In fact with the instructions at hand you will be surprised at how easy it is. As will all aspects of this game, things will get easier with time. The best way to start is small, so get a small kit and begin. Remember whether you think you can or whether you think you can't you are right.

How Many? The reality of that question applied to Miniatures

There is a common question that is asked when getting miniatures: Can I put too many pieces of doll furniture in one room? It depends on the size of the room and what you are trying to say. First, the rule of thumb is not trying to cram too much furniture, yes I know that it is fun, but everything has its limits. Second, having everything in means that what was not there is gone. You see sometimes it is not about what is in the room but what is not. The empty space gives your eyes a chance to relax on those miniatures that are in the room. However, this doesn't mean that you should go to far the other way and place a single chair in an entire room. At the end of the day you will have to come to that balance on your own.

Fabrics and Cloth

Once you understand that anything and everything can change, be created, or designed in your dollhouse it opens up tons of potential. The shear amount of detail can be both overwhelming and exiting. Fabrics and cloth is one awesome example as you can coordinate colors and have your favorites stand out. The bedroom is an excellent demonstration of detail and the breadth of items that you can create. Just think of all the fabrics that you use in your own bedroom - Sheets, curtains, blankets, etc. Moving on to the dinning room there is the dinning table cloth and if you are really fancy you can have coordinating napkins. After the dining room you go to the bathroom and do some his and her towels, or even a floor mat. There is just an unending amount of personal style that you can put into your dollhouse.

Adding a Mood

Designers might know about lighting, and colors, but only the great ones design for mood. The mood of the room is chosen by the expectations of those that do, or plan to use it. One example of a mood is the dining room should be a place of meeting, where people can relax and talk to one another. One more example would be the bedroom, the most personal quarters, and is designed for only one person. Just as houses are dictated by mood, a great dollhouse should as well. Visualize what mood you would like to portray in your rooms, for what purposes would they have that room and what particular mood would they set. As you increase your miniaturist talent with your own dollhouses people will notice the particular moods, and even though they can't quite put there finger on it, they will be impressed.
