Rearranging Furniture? Try Some New Strategies

Have you ever found yourself confused as to the correct layout of your dollhouse furniture? A placement strategy is simply a way of trying things differently to give you the arrangement you want. As there are so many different ways to layout furniture let us talk about arranging by symmetrical shapes. In order to use the triangle design you will need three major pieces of furniture for the room, imagine that they form a triangle and place them accordingly. The square design is used with either three or four types of big pieces of furniture, with four pieces the furniture is places in the corner of an imaginary square. You can also use the square approach with five pieces; just place the extra piece in the middle. The square and triangle layouts are the most common, but do try many other shapes like an ellipsis, octagon, or even a bell curve.

Styling by Era

When you first started this adventure of making, building, or designing your dollhouse, did you know what style you wanted it to be? Most of us want the furniture, paint, wallpaper, etc, to match and flow together from one room to another. This is creating a styling theme. When you get right down to it, you might have your choice set out for you as there are really only three major era styles in dollhouse furniture. If you are more of a romantic you will choose the Victorian theme, because it resembles a tasteful past, fluid curves, and astounding furniture pieces. Modern furniture is more technological, rigid, and fun - giving you options like Television sets, pool tables, and other modern pieces. The last is Traditional furniture - it is more about functionality than design, giving you the pieces of furniture that you might find in a local store which is great to make a replica, or to just make your dolls feel at home.

Making your Miniature House Better: Floor Trim

Everyone likes to tweak there dollhouses from time to time. The last dollhouse that I was making I discovered a great addition that really made my interior stand out. This big discovery was floor trim. The discovery is not entirely new, or my own, there are many places to get doll trim, but I found the cheapest is a very thin flat balsa wood. Simply paint it the color of your dollhouse and attach it to the foot of your walls. My biggest discovery is when the trim hid most of the fine mistakes between the floor and the wall. The wallpaper walls were also trimmed and I was really happy to see that it prevented fraying due to covering the edges. It was a little addition that was fun to install and really added to the look of my dollhouse.

Adding a Mood

Great designers know that in order to have a good layout and design you need to strive for the appropriate mood. Each room has a mood, meaning that there are some underlying purposes for which you would have that room. One example of a mood is the dining room should be a place of meeting, where people can relax and talk to one another. One more example would be the bedroom, the most personal quarters, and is designed for only one person. Those dollhouses that are awe inspiring tap into the settings and mood of each room to design it. To tap into your mood settings, think about the purpose of the room, why it is their, and what designs, colors, furniture, would better suit that mood. As you increase your miniaturist talent with your own dollhouses people will notice the particular moods, and even though they can't quite put there finger on it, they will be impressed.
