Clearwater Marine Aquarium Introduces Beach Visitors To Florida Aquatic Life

Clearwater Beach is regarded as one of the top Florida vacation destinations for beach-goers. But it also is a haven for aquatic life with the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Established in 1972, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, also known as the Clearwater Marine Science Center (CMSC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and preserving Florida aquatic life, while educating the public.

In 1981 the aquarium created its first exhibit room, the Sea-Orama. The center continues to develop new and exciting exhibits to attract visitors from all over, with the intent of promoting environmental awareness.

You can find dolphins, sea turtles, otters, sharks, fish, stingrays, and other marine animals throughout the aquarium, including Winter the dolphin. Winter is the centers most famous resident, appearing on the NBC Today Show, CNN, BBC, and more.

She was originally rescued from a lagoon near Cape Canaveral after being wrapped tightly in a crap trap line. Her recovery was long and grueling, and she lost two vertebrae and her entire tail as a result of her injuries. She has since gotten a prosthetic tail a first for dolphins.

Winter has now become the poster-child for promoting awareness of the dangers these animals can encounter on a daily basis as the result of mans carelessness. Visitors come from all over to see Winter, as well has her dolphin friends, Panama, Nicholas, and Indy.

They also come to view the other aquatic life and the centers 12 exhibits, including a spectacular Underwater Viewing Tunnel, Touch Tanks, and Dolphin Presentations. The dolphins love to entertain large crowds of people.

The aquarium also has a state-of-the-art Atlantis Theater which can sit 125 people at a time. There guests can watch Winters Story, a 30 minute presentation produced by an Emmy Award-winning production team that has been a hit since it debuted in December 2010.

Other hot spots at the center include Turtle Lagoon, Animal Kitchen (see how the animals food is prepared!), Stingray Beach, Otter Land, and the Fish and Shark Tanks.

Presentations at the aquarium take place all day long from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm, meaning you can come at any time. It is open seven days a week with varying times, with most days 9 am to 5 pm and extended hours on Friday and Saturday. Admission for adults is $14.95, for children ages 3-12 $9.95, and for seniors 60+ $10.95. You can also purchase Sea Life Safari tickets and Combo Packages which include behind the scenes admission and more.

The aquarium is located right by the Clearwater Memorial Causeway off of Clearwater Beach. Its a short drive from some of the Clearwater Beach Hotels and Clearwater Beach Condos. Not staying in Clearwater Beach? Its easily accessible from St. Pete Beach and Treasure Island Hotels too.
