Cleaning Your Gutters

Cleaning Your Gutters

Cleaning out your gutters is a major headache that may have to be done several times a year, a task that, if not dealt with properly, can create a bigger problem and cost you a lot of money sorting it out. As Spring and Autumn arrive, blossom, twigs and leaves from the trees, and birds or insects happy to build their nests in your gutter, all can contribute to a clogged gutter. The end result is you have a blocked gutter and overflow of rainwater cascading down the side of your house, staining the walls and creating mayhem in the garden. If you don't take care of the problem swiftly you could end up with cracked foundations, a waterlogged basement and a major expense to deal with.

Keeping your gutters clean and free from debris is also important for another reason. All that debris can attract forms of life that you don't really want around your house. Mosquitoes will be drawn to any stagnant water that can't escape past the clogged section, they lay thousands of eggs and are not only annoying but also dangerous as they can spread disease, and if you enjoy relaxing in the garden you don't want to be pestered by these. Bees, wasps, and hornets are also drawn to debris in gutters and if it is up to you to clean the gutters out several times a year you are likely to get stung by them unless you take careful precautions. If a part of your house wall is repeatedly getting damp, then fungus, mold, mildew, or moss could develop. The long-term presence of moisture and molds can affect granite rock and eventually make it crumble.

Life will be so much easier for you if you prevent your gutters from getting clogged in the first place. If the idea of climbing a ladder and walking around on the roof doesn't exactly appeal to you there are other options available. Installing a gutter guard system can help keep all that debris out of your gutters and eliminate the need to have them cleaned as often. Gutter guards also assists in channeling the water to flow in the right direction and down onto the ground. A gutter guard that is maintained correctly can help protect your gutters from clogging, enhance the exterior of your house, protect your investment and reduce your maintenance costs. Gutter guards can be chosen in a material that fits in with your current gutter and the exterior of your house; generally metals used are vinyl, aluminum, and copper.

Where you live in the country and the size and type of house you live in, will have a great deal to do with how much you get charged for hiring a handyman to clean your gutters. If you live in an area surrounded by leafy trees you might need to get them cleaned 2 or 3 times a year. If your property has more than one storey, a steep roof and lots of guttering you will be charged more. A handyman will also take into account the danger factor of climbing up ladders and negotiating tricky areas of a roof as this will mean the job takes more time, since ladders or tie-downs have to be moved. Investing in a gutter cover or screen can be more costly initially, but in the long term it will mean you don't have to hire a handyman several times a year and save you money and time.
