Cleaning Tips For Stained Silk Ties

By:

Ties made of the purest silk exude charm, elegance and sophistication. Beautiful as they are, ties made of silk are also the hardest to manage. They are the most difficult to tie and even harder to clean.

Truth be told, silk ties are not supposed to be cleaned because of their very delicate nature. Silk fabrics have the tendency to fall apart when mishandled. Nonetheless, you do not want to be seen either in a silk tie that has traces of dirt on them.
In any case, here are some useful tips on how to take that dirt off your silk ties and give it a cleaner finish without having to damage the delicate fabric.
Stains in your silk tie must be removed immediately even if you are in the middle of a lunch date. Letting it stay will make it impossible to remove. However, blotting it off with water is a big no-no. Silk and water do not go together. Instead, use a soft paper towel with a very small amount of stain remover dabbing it onto the stain as gently as possible.

In the event that stain is still visible, the last resort that you will ever have is to have your tie dry cleaned. Although dry cleaning is not recommended, it is the only possible option that is available. However, you can request form your dry cleaner to use the gentlest chemical. Likewise, it is neither a guarantee that the stain will be eventually removed once it has been dry cleaned. Guess you just have to try your luck.

Ties made of soft silk fabric have a different way of cleaning the stain. Using a soft towel that is hanged on a hot radiator, spread the silk tie over it. Evenly spray the stained area with water vapor without soaking it. Blot the tie with the help of a soft tissue paper, leaving it on the radiator for the rest of the night. In case the stain is still there, you may again try the same process.

Having grease, oil, butter or margarine stains on your silk tie is tantamount to terror. There is not much that you can do except for one technique that will require your patience. As soon as you get home, put your silk tie on a towel laid on a flat surface. You can then sprinkle with talcum powder or corn starch the stained area and let it stay overnight. The procedure allows for the stains to be absorbed by the starch. In case the technique will not work, you may repeat the procedure twice. If it doesn't work effectively, then it is time to say goodbye to your silk tie. You can always buy a new one from an online store that sells only the best and authentic silk ties.

Prevention is better than a pound of cure. This also holds true even in taking good care of your silk ties. Thus, it is always safe to avoid being in a situation wherein you will expose your silk tie to being stained.
