Cleaning And Organizing Your Garage

Years of clutter and other treasures are often placed into the garage when there is no place for them in the home. A garage is an ideal place for storage but over time, too much stuff can make it hard to use. When it is time to clean out the garage, it is also a good time to organize and put things in easily accessible places.

1. Separate the junk from the treasure. People have a tendency to keep a lot of their old stuff because maybe the items will be used in the future. When you are cleaning out and de-cluttering, it is important to do it with an objective eye. Look at your stuff and organize it into three piles: a keep pile, a garage sale pile, and a junk pile. If you have old refrigerators or washers or other metal items, there are local companies that will typically pick it up and haul it away for free. You can always recycle or off the items for free. One man's junk is often another man's treasure. You can hold a garage sale to get rid of the stuff that is still good or useable. This can be saved for other activities or items.

2.Organize the items that you are keeping. Purchase bins and other storage to place your items. Be sure to label the bins so that you know what is there. There are also storage shelves that will make organizing easier. Shelving and cabinets can be used to make sure that everything has a place. If you have tools that you need to access easily, slatwall would be a good option to organize them. When slatwall is mounted to a wall, you can buy hooks and shelving that can hang from it. The shelving and hooks serve a great purpose. They keep the tools out in the open so they can be used for projects. There are also tool benches with a cork board that allow a people to straighten out the tools as well.

It is easier to maintain order once it has been established. When you begin to put more items into the garage, ask yourself a few questions: will it be used, do you need it, or will you get rid of it in the future? Depending on your answer, make it a point to keep your garage clean and organized and a great place to actually park your car.
