The probes of a pulse oximeter use sensors for reading pulses through the skin. While they are well protected inside the probe housing, the sensors and the inner workings of the probe are prone to buildup of dirt and dead skin cells from frequent use. Proper care and frequent cleaning of the pulse oximeter probe can ensure the accuracy and functionality of such wonderful medical device. The first thing to be consulted is the user manual that comes with the package of the device, which tells the basic steps of maintaining it.
Make sure that the pulse oximeter and the probes are unplugged before cleaning it in order to avoid electrical shock and easy handling. For probes with a disposable cover, remove the cover and discard it. If it is a one-piece finger probe, open it and inspect inside for signs of dirt buildup. If it is heavily dirty, wipe it with a dry clean cloth.
Soak a gauze pad with about seventy percent alcohol solution, or any medical grade alcohol cleanser. Wipe the probe thoroughly with the gauze pad in order to remove dirt and dead skin cells. Use additional gauze pads saturated with cleanser, and continue wiping the probe until it is sterile enough. Wipe the cord with a clean pad and cleanser as well.
If the probe has been possibly steeped with blood or other bodily fluids, soak the probe in the same alcohol solution for ten minutes in order to disinfect and sterilize it. Put the probe and the cord in the cleansing solution. However, do not put the connector terminal of the cord in the cleanser, as it will damage the device. After soaking, remove the probe and the cord and wipe them with a gauze pad soaked with sterile water. Then, dry it with a clean cloth.
The probes of a
pulse oximeter should be stored inside its carrying case in order to prevent it to be damaged. Make sure that the device is not placed with heavier items that might crush the
pulse oximeter and damage the probes and other components of the device. Store it in a clean and dry environment to avoid dirt from building up in the device.
