Clean Upholstery - Some General Tips

By:

It is natural that in our upholstery one of the things we most value is its great appeal in our house design. But upholstery is a fabric used for daily tear and wear, that is why it requires regular special care and cleaning. In this article we take a look at some general as well as some more specific tips on how to clean upholstery properly.

Here are some general upholstery cleaning recommendations:

Try to clean and remove all the stains immediately after they were made. Fresh stains come off much more easier than the old ones.

If you want to keep your upholstery clean and fresh for a long time without ruining it or losing its color, avoid exposing upholstery to direct sun rays or bright neon and halogen light.

Natural materials upholstery is sensitive to dry air and can easily be damaged if kept in low humidity.

Synthetic materials upholstery easily accumulates static electricity and thus gathers more dust and dirt on it. It requires more often cleaning.

Finally, before you proceed to clean upholstery you should better make a test and try your cleaning supplies on some hidden upholstery corner to see what effect it will produce on it.

Now I would like to give you some more specific recommendations on upholstery cleaning:

In mechanical upholstery cleaning you may use mainly three options: brush cleaning, vacuum cleaning or rub cleaning.

If you are going to clean fleecy velours or other synthetic upholstery made of wool, mohair, viscose base fabric you should use a soft brush for brush cleaning, soft vacuum cleaning attachment or special leather wet tissue for the rub cleaning.

If you are going to clean smooth fabric upholstery, you should use soft cloth brush for its brush cleaning, use smooth vacuum cleaning attachment or special leather wet tissue for the rub cleaning.

No matter what cleaning method you choose for your upholstery always try to localize the stains and start cleaning them outside in.

For the fleecy fabrics: never clean them against their hair.

If you choose to clean your upholstery using detergent, you may select either dry or liquid ones.
- Flax upholstery is not suitable for any sort of detergent cleaning.

Following these recommendations you may do your own home upholstery cleaning, preserving its long life and good condition. Clean upholstery is not only pleasant ot the eyes, but it makes your home environment clean and safe place for living.
