Classic Toys Are Making A Come Back

Classic Toys Are Making A Come Back

By:

Classic toys have a lasting appeal to many collectors, parents and children of all ages. For collectors, vintage toys that are rare and in mint condition, will collect a handsome sum at an auction or trade show. For many new parents today, we are finding that many of the toys we played with are now being marketed to our children. Our children of course think these are brand new toys, which is of course genius marketing by the toy manufacturers.

You see, if these toys did well in our generation, it is quite likely they will have the same appeal today, despite the iPods and video games being so prevalent. In fact, I recently found myself buying a Transformer robot for my 6 year old nephew, who can't get enough of these toys. It brought back a flood of memories from my childhood, which is what I'm sure these companies are also banking on. If you have fond memories of a toy, you are much more likely to buy it for your child, than some new toy you never heard of. It is only natural of course.

Many of my favorite toys from my childhood are finding their way onto store shelves these days, including Transformers, Gi Joes and of course Star Wars action figures. So how long before they bring back He-Man and the Masters of the Universe? It isn't right for any child to grow up without knowing who Skeletor is, right? I kid of course, but I wouldn't be shocked to see a He-Man movie soon, followed by a flood of these toys to follow.

I also know many parents who are buying actual vintage toys from the 50s-70s, off Ebay auctions and Craigslist. My brother bought his daughter a baby doll stroller from 1959, and it cost him $200. I certainly wouldn't spend that kind of money knowing my child was likely to destroy the toy, but that is his business. It also gives you a good idea of some of the unique vintage toys that can be found online.

In the end, what's old is now becoming new again. Toys from past generations seem to have their own appeal and many of them have withstood the test of time. I wouldn't be surprised to discover that a new generation of parents twenty years from now are in fact buying vintage Ipods for their children. Maybe I should have kept mine in the plastic!
