Class 4 And Class 7 Atl Bays Driving The Future

Saving time, money and manpower, Class 4 and Class 7 ATL MOT bays are rapidly becoming the equipment of choice since their introduction in 2005, for both small and large MOT Testing Stations. The authorisation by VOSA for this type of equipment saw the biggest change in MOT technical equipment since the test was first introduced in 1960. Making testing more efficient and professional, the ATL makes the job of the tester easier as the systems can accurately measure wear in vehicle components.

The ATL incorporates shaker plates that assess the vehicles suspension and steering systems and also includes roller brake testers. The equipment automatically tests these components while the tester can asses their condition visually. The brake test is completely automated and linked to a PC.

The menu driven software automatically starts the rollers once the vehicle is in place and includes prompts throughout the test to assist the tester finally calculating the result and providing a comprehensive printout of the result. Most ATL systems will now incorporate a Headlamp Beam Tester, which is designed to also test supplementary beams and fog lamps.

ATL systems are designed for use by a single tester and have been authorised by VOSA for this purpose. This is where the real advantage for Authorised Test Station proprietors lies, especially for smaller garages. The need for an assistant is removed during the MOT, freeing up manpower to complete other work, while making the MOT process itself faster and more efficient. Small wonder then, that the installation of an ATL system has become an attractive, popular and cost effective option. In addition, due to its computerised nature, the ATL system will provide more consistent results.

While upgrading testing stations to One Person Testing OPT can be achieved by replacing lift systems with a system fitted with shaker plates, adding mirrors and a pedal depressor there are distinct advantages to fitting a full ATS. The systems have now been legal in the UK for five years and are considered future proof as they incorporate features that allow for additional testing equipment to be added to the system, which will be invaluable in ensuring that Testing Stations can quickly comply with any future VOSA requirements.

Though not compulsory as yet under VOSA regulations, the cost and time savings that Class 4 and Class 7 ATL MOT testing bays provide have proved increasingly popular to garages throughout the UK. They also have the advantage that they can usually be incorporated into existing layouts, lift systems and pits, whereas upgrading to OPT may require modifications and further approval from VOSA.

Now amongst the most popular equipment for testing centres in addition to their financial benefits ATLs can be installed quickly and require minimal, if any, training for experienced testers.
Allowing for greater efficiency, flexibility, speed and productivity, no MOT Testing Station can afford to not take advantage of installing an ATL for both Class 4 and Class 7 MOT testing.
