Civilian War Memorial - For Those Lost Yet Not Forgotten

By:

Most races and even countries who have seen and experienced the atrocities of war choose more often than not to leave the memory of their gruesome past buried in the past, hoping that with the passing of time wounds will heal and that the saddening recollections of lost souls will be erased. Although ignorance in this case could bring about short term bliss, erasing the past could have regretful consequences as time wears on and new generations take the place of the old and wise. Thinking along these lines one would feel that the remembrance of a conflict which once devastated the country could act as a constant reminder of the mistakes made by generations before them.
The Civilian War Memorial in Singapore is one such reminder, which was constructed in memory of the countrys darkest times when the Japanese occupation brought turmoil and destruction to this peaceful paradise island. While the monument is dedicated to the Singaporeans who lost their lives during the period between 1942 and 1945, the iconic structure itself has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in the country. The surrounding area near the monument is peaceful and inviting, offering a place to relax for the visitor in search of a quiet corner in the city.
To give the monument true meaning, the remains of those who died during the war are buried at the site as well. Representing the four main races of the country, each of the four pillars which make up the monument is approximately 70 meters tall. Known as the Chopsticks among local folk in Singapore due to its appearance, the Civilian War Memorial was designed by Singapores own Swee Lim, who later was awarded a prize for his splendid achievement.
