Cinnamon To Stabilise Blood Sugar Levels, Especially For Type 2 Diabetes

By:

Recent findings suggest that a daily cinnamon supplement can help lower blood sugar levels in diabetes patients. Researchers also found that cinnamon helps calm blood sugar levels in healthy subjects. These findings support extensive speculation that cinnamon supplements can help stabilise blood glucose and lipid levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is the most common metabolic disease worldwide and can lead to a host of complications, such as blindness, amputations, stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. Often, many of these complications can be avoided by maintaining normal blood glucose and lipid levels.

It is believed cinnamon provides these beneficial health properties through its ability to enhance the body's ability to use the insulin it already produces, especially in muscle tissue. This can be beneficial for every healthy adult, but especially for those with Type 2 diabetes.

Where does cinnamon come from?

Cinnamon is found in the brown bark of the cinnamon tree and has history as both a spice and a medicine. The bark contains essential oils that contain many active components, plus a wide range of volatile substances, all of which are beneficial to our health. Cinnamon is an excellent source of manganese, dietary fibre, calcium and iron. It is believed to provide 5 times as many antioxidants as a small handful of blueberries or a cup of pomegranate juice.

However, despite these positive initial indicators, further research is still needed. The majority of studies conducted so far have only monitored small numbers of people, and the long term effects still need to be established.

Supplements should always be used as an addition to a healthy lifestyle regime, in combination with balanced diet and regular exercise. Cinnamon is not a cure for diabetes, but, as these studies suggest, it may be able to help glycemic control. If you do suffer from diabetes then your blood sugar levels should be monitored regularly by a GP. If left unchecked they can lead to serious medical conditions.
