Cider And The Bearded Lady

Cider And The Bearded Lady

By:

Word had spread about my meeting with the bearded lady and I was inundated with requests for more information. People were intrigued as to whether or not I had seen her again. I was as fascinated as everyone else. I felt myself drawn back, even if it meant returning to the barn area.

I had last seen her selling her bottles of cider from inside the barn. The last glimpse I had had of her was when she had fallen from the farmhouse table she had been sat on. As I had fled I could see her legs waving in the air as she tried to right herself. Normally, I face everything that others shy away from and I was angry with myself that I had run in fear.

Ironically, just as I had made myself give up on the idea of returning, I had a phone call from a client, who wanted a house refurbished in the vicinity of the barn. It was fate, I was meant to run into the bearded lady once more.

My route took me directly to the small country road that would lead me to the barn. Fear mounted and I forced myself to continue. With a great deal of anxiety I parked the car and stared at the crudely written sign that shwed that cider was on sale. As my eyes took in the scene, I saw her, the crone had been staring at me and as our eyes connected she winked at me. She took a deep puff on her pipe and coughed.

I stopped the car , and got out. 'Ere '
she said 'Want some' offering me her
clay pipe to suck on. I knew she had
been drinking, simply by the smell,
which was a mixture of body odor,
cider, and her pipe.

A welsh dresser was perched at the side of the barn. 'A bottle of cider please'. The words sounded strangled and she cackled before spitting on the floor. 'Be warned' she said inbetween her laughs before raising her finger to point at me. 'Any person you think ugly will be transformed into the most desirable person you have ever seen.' I gulped and was turning to leave when she grabbed my shoulder. Frozen in my tracks I turned round. 'That is until the morning.' cackling once more I managed to escape her grip and fled to the safety of my car. Once there I sped away instantly regretting buying the bottle and having once more come into contact with one such as she.
