Christmas Shopping With Kids

Christmas Shopping With Kids

By:

Parents with small children might long for those pre-family days when they could do their Christmas shopping quickly, but they know now that nothing happens quickly, when little shoppers are involved. Christmas shopping with young children requires the kind of planning that would impress military strategists.

There's no such thing as rushing, for instance. You don't zip around the slow shoppers at the mall. You can't just hop in the car and dash to the next location, when you've finished at this one. You certainly can't wait until those late-night, extended-hour sales at your favorite stores to do your shopping.

Life as a parent, even at Christmastime, is all about someone else's sleeping and eating habits, and never about yours. But you can make the season a little less painful, by taking care to think ahead, just a bit.

Before you embark, make sure your kids understand exactly what the journey is about. Let them know what gifts you are shopping for, and for whom. This will help them realize that there's a goal to be met.

Ask your children if there's anything they need to shop for on this trip. Maybe it's the perfect time to buy that gift for Grandpa. Involving your children as active participants will help to keep them interested the whole trip.

Shop somewhere that has a Santa Claus, ready to listen to your kids' Christmas wishes. Most malls, during the holidays, have a Santa on call during all business hours, and very few children will pass up the chance to sit on his lap.

Take along something to eat. When children get hungry, as they do, often, they get cranky. Snacking will help them stay alert and engaged.

Many shopping centers and malls have childrens' play areas, and some have drop-off services with certified care-givers. Other parents can be a good resource to discover which are the best, in your town.

Plan ahead, with your kids, and promise them a prize for good behavior, when the shopping journey is over. But be sure to award such a prize, only if they've earned it. They'll learn to associate misbehavior with adverse consequences, and hopefully, your next trip will be more pleasant.

As a parent of small children, you know that no trip with them is easy. But Christmas shopping with your kids doesn't have to be torture, as long as you plan ahead.
