Christmas Dinner On A Budget

By:

The important thing to remember is that Christmas is not just a time to eat, drink and be merry. The message of Christmas should still form an integral part of the season, and the same goes for the Christmas dinner. It should feel special, and not just because of the abundance of food and lavish and excessive trappings and trimmings.
Choose a simple menu and spend as much time and care with it as you can spare. Presentation and flavour are the most important aspects of any meal, so make sure that the meal looks and tastes great, rather than worry about quantity. You can start buying up ingredients long in advance too, freezing and storing what you can until the big day. Then buy your fresh ingredients from the shops with the best prices and special offers just in time. Most shops have lots of specials on offer at this time of year; just dont be tempted to overspend because an item is on sale. Stick to your menu plan.
If you are cooking for fewer than ten people, then maybe a giant turkey is not the answer to your Christmas dinner menu....try something a little different. Baby chickens, also known as poussin, are a great way to serve up individual roasts to each guest, and are delicious served with roasted winter veggies. If you are bearing the brunt of a huge family gathering this year then suggest that you are willing to carry the costs of, for example, the turkey while the rest of the family each brings a dish. Coordinate this mission and you will find your Christmas table overflowing with a variety of tasty Christmas offerings.
The best way to save is to shop around and look for specials and bargains on the menu items you are looking for. Its also a good time of year to reassess your general household expenditure and consider where you can save money for the New Year. You might find that changing your home insurance provider could save you lots of money in insurance premiums, or that changing your mobile provider saves a few extra pounds on call costs every month.
Whatever you decide to serve for Christmas dinner this year, may it be a merry and memorable day.
