Choosing Wrought Iron Curtain Rods

By:

In general wrought iron curtain rods will cost a little more than an ordinary wooden rod. But the rods are hard wearing, long lasting and stylish. The metal can be bent and sculpted into so many different shapes and styles. No longer is wrought metal looked upon as only being functional but now it can also be classed as a sweeping interior design statement.

Iron poles offer a more interesting way of hanging curtains. Traditional wooden poles are attractive but metal poles are well suited to both contemporary and traditional surroundings.

Many hardware stores stock metal poles but bespoke poles can be ordered from a blacksmith. Iron can be bent and fashioned into designs to suit the individual. The metal is durable and long lasting, it also has charm and can add a touch of rural appeal to a home.

The heavy duty poles are available in various different finishes. A polished metal curtain rod looks chic and stylish, a rod with a brass finish can tone in with existing fittings. A pole with a gold tone suits light and bright rooms whereas a bronze rod looks amazing when placed in a room that has dark wooden beams. A pole with a traditional black finish will match in with most interiors.

The main purpose of the rod is to hold the drapes. But a metal rod makes a sweeping statement. The pole maybe partially obscured by the curtains but the finials at either end of the pole are on show for all to admire. Choosing the right finials for the rod is essential. Classic rod finials will still be fashionable in many years to come but contemporary finials may have to change as fashion trends dictate.

When putting up any curtain pole the fitments must be chosen with care. A metal pole needs to be hung using the proper brackets. There are many types of bracket to choose from and it is important to choose the correct type and weight of bracket. If the pole is going to be suspended from the ceiling then the rod needs to be hung using ceiling brackets, if the pole is going to have to hang in a recess then it will need to hang using recess brackets.

When hanging drapes from a rod it is essential to use matching rings. Yet again there are many different types of stylish rings to choose from and genuine hand crafted wrought metal rings are widely available from internet stores and auction sites.

Before purchasing any pole and fitments it is wise to think about the size and weight of the curtains that are going to be hung. It will be necessary to drill the walls or ceiling to fit the brackets so it is important that the rod is sturdy enough to hold the weight of the curtains. Drapes that hang from a pole may benefit from being held in place with tie backs. Elaborately sculpted metal tie backs can enhance the overall finish and allow more light to flood into the room.
