Choosing To Drive, Not Fly

By:

It used to be that most people just rented vehicles for when they needed to travel for business or for a long family holiday. These days with the rising cost of air travel and the long hassles at many U.S. commercial airports many people are opting for renting a vehicle and driving to their destination instead of flying.

With this the car rental agencies are feeling a surge in rentals and they continue to rise. Since most rental companies have chosen to reduce their fleets this is proving profitable for their companies and they are one of the few travel industries that are showing a marked profit because of this. They found a way to increase their cash flow by selling off their vehicles during a time when business was slow.

Having to deal with a less than favorable economic turn of events, have forced business to cut expenses and this would include cutting lease vehicles in favor of a rent as needed vehicle for employees or business travel. The unsteady economy could also be responsible for individuals keeping their older cars longer and seeing holiday travelers choose shorter destinations when they decide to vacation. All these conditions have contributed to the rise in the demand for rental vehicles for traveling and reducing the wear and tear on personal vehicles. Businesses are also seeing the saving add up against the standard air travel expenses.

Wise business decisions are evident and can attest to the car rental companies that have survived during and thrived after an economic panic. Seeing the need to sell off unused older inventory and hanging on to current inventory longer has given these car rental companies the edge when rental business begins to pick up again. Having available cash during the the lean times is a great tool to lessen the effects of any economic panic.

More people are choosing to rent vehicles now than ever before and one of the key reasons lies within the current economic climate and the failure of the airline industry to produce better results for their customers. In the long run this is a situation that is driving business away from the commercial airlines and can be seen in the number of car rentals that took place in 2009. Over time if customer service issues continue to plague the airlines it only stands to reason that car rental companies will once again begin increasing their fleet size to meet public demand.
