Choosing The Right Wholesale Business For You

By:

The economic downturn has forced many people to think beyond their nine-to-five jobs and turn to entrepreneurship. As a result, many people are joining the wholesale business bandwagon. But, is wholesaling business really profitable? There is no definite answer to this question. The competition in this business is high; and therefore, you should come up with a novel business idea to become successful.

The first step in choosing the right wholesale business is to decide a niche for you. There are many product categories to choose from right from electronics, clothes, furniture, and tools to baby products and nutritional supplements. But, the big question is how to choose which products to sell.

Most people make the mistake of chasing the hottest business trends. Like, if everybody else is selling cell phones, they also start selling cell phones. However, this should be best avoided. Your business idea should be original. You should do something that you have a passion for. For instance, if clothes inspire you, you could start a wholesale clothing business.

Once you decide on a broad niche, you should decide which products to sell within that niche. Like, if you decide to sell clothes, you should decide whether you will deal in men's, women's, or kids' clothing. Selling all of them is not recommended; otherwise, you will need to make a huge investment in inventory to offer a wide-range collection to your buyers, which means high risk.

Once you decide your niche, the next step is to decide your wholesale business model. Would you like to dropship products or source your products directly from manufacturers and then sell to your customers? Your decision should be based upon how much you can invest, your risk-taking ability, and whether you want to undertake the hassle of managing inventory and processing the orders.

A dropshipping business can be started with a small investment, but in this business model, there is a risk of customer dissatisfaction. Most dropshippers do not pay enough attention to the quality of products and packaging. Some of them also fail to regularly stock their products, which results in delays in shipping orders. Moreover, the number of dropshipping services available for wholesalers and eBay suppliers are limited.

Like dropshipping, sourcing products directly from distributors, suppliers, and manufacturers has its own set of problems. The most common problem is the minimum order requirement. Most suppliers deal only with the businesses that want to buy in huge volumes. Also, you may get price discounts only if you place a big order. If you are starting out on a large scale, then this may not be a problem for you, but for small start-ups, this could be a big problem.

Starting a wholesale business is a challenge. You can become successful only if you have a proper business plan in place before taking the plunge.
