Choosing The Right Western Show Clothes To Win Your Class

By:

A lot of art and skill goes into showing horses and into horse show apparel. When you finally make it to that big show, you want to put your best foot forward. One of the ways to ensure a stellar performance is to choose the right Western show clothes for each class youre competing in.

Western pleasure is probably the most popular Western show classes. These days, most of the people in the show ring will be wearing bright, shiny, highly-embellished Western show clothes. Competitors used to wear form-fitting, stretchy shirts called slinkys into the show ring. Then it transitioned into large-cuffed blouses. Today, the trend is definitely all about jackets decorated with everything from crystals and rhinestones to turquoise and copper stones to feathers and fringe. Although a western pleasure class is all about how the horse moves through its three gaits, it helps to dress in a way that focuses the judges on the things you want.

The most important piece of criteria to use when selecting Western show clothes is to choose colors and patterns that compliment you and your horse. A nice trick to draw the judges attention away from your legs is to dress in a darker color pair of pants or chaps. Lighter colors will draw attention to that area; accentuating every movement. Western pleasure classes are all about showing the judges that your horse is a pleasure to ride, so the less they notice your legs moving, the better you will be judged.

Of course, the most important elements of any horse show outfit are that it fits well, looks neat and clean and creates a nice line between you and your horse. Things like untucked shirts, wrinkly pants, mismatched jackets, ill-fitting chaps and dirty boots all detract from your look at a show.
