Choosing The Right Salt For Your Heart And Thyroid

By:

There are many types of salt these days. The most common is the iodized salt.

Iodine is a very important mineral needed for the thyroid and for the rest of the body. If you don't have enough iodine for your thyroid, then you may have a low thyroid condition called hypothyroidism.

However, some people have a condition called hyperthyroidism in which they are supposed to avoid the extra iodine content.

So, regular iodized salt can be great for a person with hypothyroidism, but it would be bad for a person with hyperthyroidism. Generally, you would only need one fourth tsp of iodized salt if you had a low thyroid function.

For people who have hyperthyroidism, iodized salt should be avoided. There are certain sea salts that have trace minerals in them and this is evident by the grey or pink color of the salt. There may be a certain amount of iodine in these salts, but it is unclear just how much.

Iodized and processed salt is bad for people who have heart disease. Studies have shown that because of the high processing, this kind of salt is abrasive to the arteries and veins.

This abrasion leads to the accumulation of plaque within the veins and arteries. It's basically a magnet for a cholesterol and fatty buildup, which can lead to high blood pressure and a possible heart attack.

People who have a heart condition of any kind should stick to the gentle and natural forms of sea salt known as Real Salt or Himalayan salt. This will enable them to have tasty food without attacking their veins and arteries.

Real Salt comes from some clean underground mines in Redmond, Utah and is shipped all over the world. There is a huge supply.

The processed and iodized salts have chemicals added in the process to help them to be more free flowing. Natural salts can clump up, so if you put some into a shaker, they may need to have an occasional jolt to the side of the container to allow the salt to flow outward and become unstuck.

Many people like to use the more natural sea salts that have the natural grey or pink color. They think that the trace minerals will be good for them. That may or may not be true.

Usually plants get their minerals from the soil and then herbivores get their minerals from the plants, and carnivores from consuming the herbivores. However, to think that you can get your minerals like a plant does isn't the natural process of things.

You would do best to avoid mineral pills, which are essentially just ground up rocks and not something that your body is equipped to absorb in that form. Your health will improve so much better if you eat more mineral-rich plants.

Go ahead and use the salt to flavor your foods. But, don't plan on counting on salt to get your necessary nutrients. That may or may not work for good health.
