Choosing The Right Office Desks For Senior Executives

By:

Senior executives in any large corporate house have an image to maintain. They are expected be dignified, dependable people who inspire trust and stability. Their environment within the office needs to reflect these qualities too. The executive also needs to be approachable and should be able to put his visitor at ease, whether it be an office colleague or an important client. A major contributing factor in creating the right ambience that would mirror these necessary traits is the office dcor and furniture, not least amongst which is the office desk that he sits behind.

To combine the twin responsibilities of paper work and interfacing with people, the office desk of a busy executive should conveniently double as a writing desk, with sufficient space for office stationery, official documents, and the ubiquitous computer, and at the same time be a sophisticated and comfortable meeting place for serious business discussions. Space, usually, is not a constraint in an executive office, so the configurations can be varied.

If most of the files in the office are maintained by the secretary, the executives office desk need not accommodate a lot of storage space. He could opt for a thick, bean-shaped glass top with well beveled edges, resting at one end on a square, picture-frame type support. At the other end, the glass top could be resting on a slim stack of drawers with sleek handles. This kind of furniture would look ideal in a room with a plush carpet and a couple of wall paintings by recognized artists.

If paperwork and personal relations have to be accommodated in equal measure, the executive would require more working surface at her disposal. A dependable looking office desk in polished walnut wood with rounded edges, fully aproned at the visitors end in a traditional panel design can be a good choice. The desk can have a stack of three drawers at either end and a slim drawer in the center. To one side of the desk there could be a long counter, also in walnut wood, the height of which could be at a lower level than the desk. This would be a convenient surface for the computer, printer and other peripherals while the keyboard could be placed on a pull-out tray below the monitor. Below the counter top could be several cabinets and drawers to contain all official documents. Seated on a comfortable executive chair on castors, the mobility from desk to the counters would be a smooth ride.

For more space, in perhaps the office of a senior lawyer, where a constant flow of visitors is expected and papers and documents need to be stored away neatly and yet be immediately accessible, a U-shaped configuration could be a better option. The office desk could be constructed out of rosewood with an L extension that houses cabinets and drawers. Behind the desk, connected to the far end of the L could be a slimmer version of the rosewood desk with plenty of drawer space beneath and wall cabinets overhead with graciously paneled doors and matt finished brass handles.
