Choosing The Right Carpet Shampoo

Choosing The Right Carpet Shampoo

By:

If you have carpets anywhere in your home then at some point you will have to ask yourself what the best carpet shampoo is for your home. The answer may be something different for each room in your home depending on factors like traffic volume, carpet color and texture, and how long you can go without using the room. There are many different carpet shampoo products to choose from, but they can be broken down into two main categories.

The first category of carpet shampoo is dry carpet shampoo. Just like the name implies, these carpet cleaning products do not require mixing or diluting with water. They are either a powder or a spray on foam and they work without being activated by hot water. The homeowner just has to sprinkle the powder or spray the foam over the area of the carpet they wish to clean and then work it is with a scrub brush. Then, you wait for about twenty minutes for the dry carpet shampoo particles to attract the dirt particles and encapsulate them. After the waiting period, you vacuum up the shampoo along with all the dirt and bacteria the shampoo trapped.

There are certain instances that lend themselves well to using dry carpet shampoos. First, if you do not have access to a carpet shampoo machine. If you do not have the necessary equipment, dry carpet shampoos are your only choice. Second, if you are working with a particularly delicate carpet that you cannot get wet or with car carpet. You cannot introduce water into your car or on certain types of carpet fibers. A third instance where you might want to use dry carpet cleaning products is if you need access to the room quickly. Wet carpet shampoos take several hours or maybe even days to completely dry so they are inconvenient if you are under time constraints.

The other category of carpet shampoos is liquid carpet shampoo. Liquid carpet cleaners require that you dilute them with hot water. They are meant to be used with a carpet cleaning machine. Whether you choose to rent carpet shampooer or buy one, the machine will dispense the carpet cleaning solution on the carpet and scrub it in before using suction to remove the dirty results. In general, you cannot use the liquid carpet shampoo products undiluted and it is sometimes better to dilute them even more than what is suggested in the directions. If they are not properly diluted the cleaning solution will be too soapy and you run the risk of leaving behind soap residue.

There are also certain circumstances where you must use a liquid carpet shampoo rather than the dry ones. If you are cleaning a high traffic area of carpet, the dry products might not be sufficient to get out the stains and rejuvenate the carpet. Liquid carpet cleaners are often stronger stain fighters and the carpet cleaning machine is much better at scrubbing than you are by hand. Another time that you should use liquid carpet cleaners is when you want a really deep clean. Even though you work in the dry carpet shampoos by hand, the truth is that they just do not penetrate very deep into the carpet fibers. If you have a particularly plush carpet and need to clean the fibers down to the roots then wet carpet shampoo is definitely the better choice.
