Choosing The Best Wines In California

By:

California has always produced some of the world's top wines, and if you are a consumer who prefers to buy American to help support the economy or for patriotic reasons, now is the perfect time to eschew those snooty French or Italian wines and support our growers and producers here at home. So how do you go about choosing the best wines in California? Here are some tips and hints to get you started.

--Do your homework: There are some really terrific impartial websites out there that give superb descriptions and recommendations for California wines without having a vested interest in one brand or another. Golden State grape is not outlandishly priced, but you don't want to waste any money these days. So do a little homework and heed the advice from the experts: you can always experiment a little on your own too of course, but a little study will give you a base of knowledge to work from.

--Look at sales statistics: Just like the French are known for their Beaujolais, Californian vineyards are known for certain specific types of wines as well: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot (Number One in terms of sales), Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, just to name a few. These four wines rank consistently at the top of the sales lists for the state, so you can be sure that they will be delicious.

--Check labels: Certain areas of California are more conducive to growing certain types of grapes, and so if you favor a particular type you'll want to know which region has optimal growing conditions for that kind of grape. Napa and other northern counties, for example, are famous for producing excellent Sauvignons, Merlots and Chardonnays. If you are a Pinot Noir aficionado however, look for wines that come from vineyards along the South Central Coast.

--Look for wine tasting opportunities: Even if you live as far away as Iowa, you can be sure that local vendors are anxious for you to get to know (and then buy) the California wines they carry. If someone in your area is hosting a wine tasting event, take advantage! You can judge for yourself whether you are a Cabernet Sauvignon fan or lean more towards a good Merlot. You will also be better able to distinguish between the idiosyncrasies and subtleties of different vintners when you taste several at once.

The bottom line is that the best wines in California are largely a matter of personal taste: each has something great to offer the connoisseur and casual drinker alike. Whether you like red, white, rose or a bit of each: make sure you choose a good label.
