Choosing The Best Dog Bed And Other Necessities

By:

Choosing the right dog bed for your dog is a very important decision to make. Dogs sleep a large proportion of the day and if they are not sleeping they are lounging around in their bed and so it is vitally important that you choose a dog bed that is perfect for your dog. Here are some top tips to follow when choosing your dog bed.

Dog Bed Size - choosing the right size of bed for your dog is exceptionally important. So many times people choose a dog bed that they think is nice to look at or is on offer but it is too small for the dog or even too big. A large dog breed needs a large bed, there is no point in buying a tiny bed for a large dog as they won't be able to sleep in it and so would be a waste of time. If you buy a large bed for a small dog breed be sure to put lots of bedding in it so the dog feels nice and snug otherwise they will feel cold laying in the middle of a huge bed.

Dog Bed Material - when you start shopping around for your dog bed you will notice that there is a huge choice of dog beds available including what material they are made from. Dog beds can be made either from plastic, suede, cotton, tweed and many more. The different materials on offer have a different set of advantages and disadvantages associated to them. For example the plastic dog beds are more hygienic as no germs can get into the plastic and they are easy to clean however they are probably the least comfortable for the dog. On the other hand the soft suede dog beds are incredibly comfortable but suede is instantly spoiled once anything gets on it such as food, saliva, or liquid and dogs aren't known for being the tidiest or most careful of creatures when they eat.

Dog Collar - you need to have your dog collar engraved with your phone number and address as soon as you get your new dog, just in case he goes missing or gets out. Although dog collars are inexpensive, tagging your dog could make a huge difference in finding your dog. Most people read a dog's tag to see where he lives, before they phone their local dog warden.

Dog Bowls - you will need two dog bowls for your dog, one being for water and the other for food. The water bowl is usually left out at all times so the dog can have a drink as and when they want to, and the food bowl comes out for dinner times. If you choose a plastic dinner bowl you may want to pick it up after the dog has finished eating as they have a tendency of chewing them.

Dog Toys - dogs, especially puppies, love to play, run about and chew and so it is a good idea to get your dog some toys to play with to keep them entertained and happy, especially if you don't want them to play with your furniture and shoes.

If you are looking to buy a dog for the first time you may feel a little bewildered at everything you will need, especially if you are thinking of getting a puppy. Puppies are more high maintenance than older dogs, it is a little like having a baby oppose to a teenager. Puppies need to be looked after constantly for at least a few weeks until they settle in. Even older dogs may need a little training if they have never been house broken before.
